The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were spotted arriving at Birmingham Airport with their two children, Archie and Lilibet, around lunchtime this past Wednesday. The arrival comes following the couple’s announcement earlier this month that they intended to spend an “extended period” living across the pond.
A New Chapter as Private Citizens
While their return to British soil has generated intense media interest, palace insiders have confirmed that Harry and Meghan will not be resuming any official royal duties. Instead, the family is set to reside in the UK as private citizens.

“It’ll be an extended period of time—it could be six months, it could be a year, it could be more,” a source told The Sunday Times. “I don’t think even they know yet.” The source added that the couple remains open to exploring other global options, such as Canada or Australia, in the future.

The move brings Prince Harry closer to his father, King Charles, potentially offering a bridge to mend family ties. However, the path to reconciliation remains fraught with challenges. Royal expert Duncan Lanscombe told Metro that a resolution with the Prince of Wales appears unlikely in the current climate. “I can’t see any reconciliation with Prince William as far as things stand,” Lanscombe explained. “William feels the exact opposite [of Harry] and that he’s owed an apology… if Harry and Meghan don’t give that apology and make the effort, I don’t think there’s any hope for the end of the rift.”
