Olympic Champion Alysa Liu Announces Break from Competitive Figure Skating
Alysa Liu, the reigning Olympic women’s singles champion, has confirmed she will step away from competitive figure skating for the 2026-27 season to focus on artistic growth and technical refinement.
The 21-year-old skating sensation, who etched her name in history this past February by becoming the first American woman to secure Olympic gold since 2002 at the Milano Cortina Games, announced her decision via social media this week. In addition to her individual triumph, Liu was a cornerstone of the United States squad that clinched gold in the team event.
Her decision to take a hiatus means the champion will be absent from the upcoming World Championships in Finland this March.
A Focus on Evolution
In an Instagram post addressing her fans, Liu emphasized that her departure from the ice is a strategic move intended to foster her development as an athlete and a performer.
“I always want to challenge myself in new ways, so my artistry and skating can evolve. It’s important to me that my sport reflects my personal growth,” Liu wrote. “I’m gonna take the time to recalibrate, fine-tune things and whatnot. So fear not, I’ll be back, and in the meantime, I’ll be rooting for my teammates near and far.”
Speaking to NBC Sports, Liu offered further insight into the timing of her break, describing it as a holistic necessity. “Logically and emotionally and physically, this just makes the most sense,” she said. “I will miss seeing the international competitors at all the international competitions, but there will be more, so it’s fine.”
A Proven Path to Success
This is not the first time the skating world has seen Liu take a step back. A former child prodigy who stunned the sport by becoming the youngest-ever U.S. champion at age 13 in 2019, Liu has navigated a non-traditional career trajectory.
She previously shocked the sporting world in 2022 by announcing her retirement at the tender age of 16. However, her absence proved to be temporary. Liu made a sensational return to the ice, reclaiming her status at the pinnacle of the sport by winning the World Championship title in her comeback year, ultimately paving the way for her crowning achievement at the Milano Cortina Olympics.
