Prominent Mumbai Mountaineer Missing Amidst Devastating Nepal Flash Floods

MUMBAI: The trekking and mountaineering community in Maharashtra is grappling with uncertainty as news emerges that Dr. Milind P. Chitlay, a well-known Mumbai-based medical practitioner and co-founder of the adventure firm Hills and Trails, has gone missing in the wake of the catastrophic flash floods currently ravaging Nepal.

Dr. Chitlay, a seasoned mountaineer with extensive experience in the Himalayan terrain, was leading a group in the region when the disaster struck. Associates of the doctor and fellow members of the Mumbai trekking circuit have confirmed that all attempts to establish contact with him have thus far been unsuccessful, leaving his safety status entirely unknown.

“It is difficult to say anything at this stage, as the communication infrastructure in the affected areas of Nepal is severely compromised,” a spokesperson from the local trekking community stated. While the community has managed to verify the safety of at least one other group of trekkers, the silence surrounding Dr. Chitlay’s party remains a source of deep anxiety.

Dr. Chitlay is no stranger to the rugged landscapes of the Himalayas. Over the years, he has successfully spearheaded more than 18 to 19 expeditions, guiding groups of enthusiasts from Mumbai and Pune through the challenging terrain. His deep familiarity with the region makes the current silence particularly concerning for his family and colleagues.

State Government Mobilizes Rescue Efforts

In response to the escalating crisis, the Maharashtra government has launched a coordinated effort to locate and evacuate tourists from the state who remain stranded in the Himalayan nation. According to state disaster management authorities, seven tourists from Maharashtra are currently accounted for as stranded; fortunately, two individuals from Mumbai and two from Pune have successfully reached out to confirm they are safe within their respective hotels.

To streamline the rescue process, the state administration has issued a directive to all district collectors, tasking them with compiling a comprehensive database of citizens currently trapped in Nepal. This information is being funneled to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which is spearheading the diplomatic coordination required to liaise with Nepalese rescue operations.

“We expect at least 200 people from across India to be stranded in Nepal, with roughly two dozen of those potentially being from Maharashtra,” a senior official from the state’s disaster management cell explained. “Because we cannot coordinate directly with the Nepal government, all rescue and relief efforts must be routed through the Central government.”

As the situation remains fluid, officials are urging families of those who are currently missing in Nepal to remain in contact with local district authorities to ensure their loved ones are included in the government’s evacuation registers.
