Addressing the media after the match, Gill defended his tactical decision to force Sri Lanka to bat again.
“I don’t think the follow-on backfired; we fielded for over 250 overs,” Gill explained. “We were anticipating rain and wanted to take that chance. Had we not taken it and had it rained, the questions would be about why we didn’t force the issue.”
Reflecting on the result, the young skipper admitted the draw was disappointing, though he maintained it was a far different feeling than a loss. “Draw not hurting like a defeat… situation-wise, the draw was a credit to them. We hoped for a win, so it is disappointing,” he noted.
Lessons Learned
Gill remained pragmatic about the experience, viewing the stalemate as a vital learning curve in his tenure as captain. He praised his squad’s intent, giving them full marks for their effort across the five days, even as the conditions shifted in favor of the batters.
“Things don’t always go as per plan, so there are a lot of learnings for me as a captain,” Gill said. “On Day 4, we created chances, and if those wickets had come, the result could have been different. But Sri Lanka played really well, especially once the pitch became slower and batting became easier.”
Ultimately, while the series concludes with a 1-0 scorecard in India’s favor, the Colombo Test serves as a testament to Sri Lanka’s fighting spirit and provides the Indian side with plenty to reflect upon as they continue their international campaign.
