Peter Cullen, Iconic Voice of Optimus Prime and Eeyore, Dies at 85

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of a titan of voice acting. [Peter Cullen](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/english/hollywood/news/peter-cullen-voice-of-transformers-optimus-prime-and-winnie-the-poohs-eeyore-passes-away-at-85/articleshow/133573771.cms), the legendary performer whose resonant, authoritative voice brought life to some of the most beloved characters in pop culture history, has passed away at the age of 85.

His agent, Kevin Motley, confirmed that the Montreal-born actor died peacefully on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles.

A Legacy of Compassion and Strength

In an official statement released by his family, those closest to him shared that he “passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family—and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide.”

The family invited admirers to honor his memory by embodying the values of the characters he portrayed. They urged fans to serve their communities and lead with “compassion, integrity, and loyalty,” while reflecting on one of Cullen’s most profound personal mantras: “Be strong enough to be gentle.”

A Versatile Career Beyond Cybertron

While he is etched into cinema history as the definitive voice of Optimus Prime—the heroic leader of the Autobots in Transformers—Cullen’s vocal range was remarkably vast. He famously provided the soulful, melancholy voice for Eeyore in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, beginning in the late 1980s and continuing through various films and television projects for decades.

Cullen’s filmography reflects his incredible versatility. He provided the roars for the titular giant in the 1976 remake of King Kong and voiced the villainous K.A.R.R. in Knight Rider. Perhaps most surprisingly, horror aficionados recognize him as the man behind the terrifying, iconic clicking sounds emitted by the alien creature in the 1987 science-fiction classic Predator.

Before transitioning into his prolific voice-acting career, Cullen was a fixture in television as a live-action performer and announcer, appearing on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour.

An Enduring Impact

Cullen’s commitment to his most famous role, Optimus Prime, spanned nearly four decades. He voiced the character through the original 1980s animated series and returned to the role for modern blockbusters, including Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), Bumblebee (2018), and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023).

While Chris Hemsworth recently took on the mantle of Optimus Prime for the 2024 animated film Transformers One, Cullen’s performance remains the gold standard for generations of fans. From the battlefield of Cybertron to the Hundred Acre Wood, Peter Cullen leaves behind an indelible mark on the landscape of animation and voice performance.
