Parvathy Thiruvothu Rules Out Return to AMMA, Citing Lack of Safety and Relevance
Renowned actress Parvathy Thiruvothu has firmly stated that she has no intentions of returning to the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), asserting that she finds no personal or professional value in being part of the organization.
In a candid interview with Asianet News, the actress addressed the systemic issues within the industry body, noting that the association has consistently failed to provide the environment of safety, equality, and support that she expects from a collective platform.
Questioning the Relevance of AMMA
Parvathy’s comments come at a time when the association is under intense public and internal scrutiny. Currently, an ad-hoc committee led by Ramesh Pisharody is overseeing the organization’s operations.
Reflecting on the organization’s legacy, Parvathy argued that AMMA no longer commands the respect or seriousness it once held. She criticized the romanticized notion of the association as a “big family” or a protective “Big Brother” figure, stating that history has repeatedly debunked these claims.
Addressing the harsh criticism leveled at the new governing committee, she added, “People who have been sitting in those chairs for 25 years will naturally have that experience. What is the logic in giving someone new six months and then saying that they have no ability?”
Moving Beyond Institutional Reform
A founding voice in the push for systemic change within the Malayalam film industry, Parvathy also touched upon the Women in Cinema Collective’s (WCC) long-standing efforts to engage in dialogue with AMMA.
While she emphasized that both she and the WCC have historically been open to constructive discussions aimed at improving the industry, she noted that those invitations were frequently dismissed or ignored by AMMA’s leadership. Having reached a point of exhaustion regarding these efforts, the actress has decided to shift her focus entirely toward her craft.
“I don’t feel that it is a place that offers support, safety, and respect to everyone. I feel very safe even without an organisation. So, I don’t feel the need for an organisation at this point,” she stated. “I am no longer interested in it. I want to work now.”
