“One Moment of Foolishness”: Ashwin Issues Blunt Reality Check to Rishabh Pant
Indian cricket legend Ravichandran Ashwin has delivered a stark critique of wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, urging the explosive talent to prioritize match awareness over his aggressive instincts. Despite a respectable showing in the recent two-Test series against Sri Lanka—where Pant accumulated 168 runs and two half-centuries—Ashwin believes the numbers mask a concerning lack of maturity in the batter’s decision-making.
Speaking on his show ‘Ash Ki Baat’, the veteran spinner argued that while Pant’s natural flair is undeniable, his penchant for high-risk shots often crosses the line into recklessness.
The Cost of Aggression
Ashwin pointed to a specific, recurring issue in Pant’s game: the failure to read the room. He highlighted a previous dismissal against South Africa in Guwahati, where, while serving as captain, Pant charged down the track to Marco Jansen—a high-risk move that resulted in an avoidable edge to the wicketkeeper.
“My expectation from Rishabh Pant hasn’t been fulfilled till now,” Ashwin stated candidly. “When you have the game in your hand, [people say] ‘That’s how Rishabh plays.’ But it is about what your team needs. It takes 11 cricketers to build a Test and win it in the last session of the game, but it takes only one moment of foolishness to lose a Test.”
Ashwin was quick to clarify that he is not a detractor of attacking cricket. He drew comparisons to legends like Virender Sehwag and Adam Gilchrist, noting that while they played an aggressive brand of cricket, they understood when to temper that aggression. “These two don’t get edged out while dancing down to [a bowler] when your team is trailing by 500 runs,” he added.
Rejecting the “Special Treatment” Narrative
During the discussion, the show’s host suggested that players of Pant’s “once-in-a-generation” caliber should be afforded the freedom to play their natural game. Ashwin firmly rejected this, arguing that such labels often serve as excuses to shield players from necessary accountability.
“Don’t give one player special treatment. If there is that ‘once-in-a-generation’ backing, give it to everyone,” Ashwin insisted. “Rishabh is experienced; he has played 50 Tests. He needs to take responsibility.”
A Path to All-Format Redemption
The timing of Ashwin’s comments is significant. Currently, Pant is considered a specialist in the Test format, having fallen out of favor in India’s limited-overs squads. Ashwin believes that the primary roadblock to Pant becoming an all-format regular is not a lack of talent, but a refusal to refine his decision-making.
“It is because of his decision-making that he’s not playing the other two formats,” Ashwin concluded. “The day you tell him the truth, he will be an all-format player for India.”
As the team looks to solidify its squad for upcoming challenges, Ashwin’s challenge to Pant is clear: transition from being a highlight-reel player to a complete, match-winning strategist who knows when to protect his wicket for the sake of the team.
