Navy SEAL, Doctor, and Astronaut Jonny Kim Departs NASA to Return to Naval Aviation

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Jonny Kim—widely considered one of the most uniquely qualified individuals in the U.S. military—has officially concluded his nearly decade-long tenure at NASA. The decorated service member is stepping away from the space agency to return to active duty with the U.S. Navy, where he will focus on naval aviation training.

Thursday marked the final day at NASA for Kim, whose career trajectory has been nothing short of extraordinary. His journey from the frontlines of combat to the edge of the atmosphere has made him a household name within both the defense and scientific communities.

A Career Defined by Service

Kim’s transition away from NASA comes after an illustrious stint that included an eight-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). During that time, Kim orbited the Earth 3,920 times and logged roughly 104 trillion miles of space travel alongside Russian cosmonauts.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman praised Kim’s legacy, noting that his contributions to the ISS will provide data and insights that will guide space exploration efforts “for decades to come.”

“Jonny Kim represents the very best of NASA, a person who continually pushed the boundaries of exploration while inspiring countless others,” Isaacman said. “We are grateful for his dedication to our nation and to the pursuit of knowledge, and we wish him success as he continues his service in the U.S. Navy.”

From Special Operations to Space Exploration

Before his selection as an astronaut in 2017, Kim’s life was defined by elite military service. Enlisting in the Navy in 2002, he eventually became a Navy SEAL, completing over 100 combat missions in Iraq. His heroism in the field earned him significant decorations, including the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with “V” device, and the Combat Action Ribbon.

It was during his deployments in Ramadi and Sadr City that Kim felt a calling to medicine. After witnessing the work of the doctors in his unit, he was inspired to attend Harvard Medical School to become a physician.

“I made promises to a lot of the people that I lost, that I would spend the rest of my life doing something good, something positive for the world,” Kim shared during a 2020 interview with Task & Purpose.

A Pivot Back to the Cockpit

Even while serving as an astronaut, Kim continued to push his own boundaries. In 2023, he qualified as a Naval Aviator, successfully completing advanced helicopter flight training. He noted at the time that the transition required a significant shift in his cognitive approach to piloting, specifically regarding the use of night-vision technology in a cockpit environment.

As he moves into this next chapter, Kim remains focused on the core values that have defined his career: empathy, leadership, and a commitment to his fellow service members.

“Contributing to space exploration and serving NASA has been the honor of a lifetime,” Kim said in a statement. “Throughout my career, I’ve learned that beyond the missions, the training, and the hardware, success always comes down to the people. They are our greatest asset, and leading with love and empathy is how we achieve the impossible.”

As he returns to the fleet, the military community remains eager to see how the experience of a former SEAL, doctor, and astronaut will influence his next steps in naval aviation. Kim has expressed that he looks forward to applying the lessons of the last decade to make a “meaningful impact on humanity’s future.”
