Nepal Army Mounts Massive Rescue Effort as Flash Floods Devastate Mountain Districts

TRISHULI – The Nepal Army is engaged in an intensive, multi-agency rescue operation after catastrophic flash floods tore through several of the nation’s most vulnerable districts. According to military officials, 900 people have been successfully evacuated from the worst-hit areas, including the mountainous regions of Rasuwa and Nuwakot.

The rescue mission has spanned a diverse group of survivors, highlighting the international impact of the disaster. Among those brought to safety are 119 foreign nationals, the vast majority of whom—92 individuals—are Indian. As reporting from the ground indicates, Indian citizens represent the largest demographic of international visitors currently impacted by the unfolding humanitarian crisis.

Brigadier General Rajaram Basnet, acting as the army’s spokesperson, addressed the media from a helicopter landing zone situated outside a local military barracks. He confirmed that all 900 rescued individuals have been transported to medical facilities for treatment. While he did not provide specific details regarding the severity of their injuries, he noted that they remain under hospital care.

The scale of the devastation has left even seasoned military officials shaken. When questioned about the magnitude of the destruction, Brigadier General Basnet offered a sobering assessment: “I haven’t seen this kind of disaster in my life.”

The operation remains perilous, as unpredictable weather patterns and persistent heavy rainfall continue to hamper emergency efforts. The difficult terrain, characteristic of the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, has necessitated the frequent use of helicopters to reach isolated populations cut off by damaged infrastructure.

“Rain and unpredictable weather has made rescue operations increasingly challenging,” Basnet acknowledged. “But we’re trying to… intensify the rescue operations, in close coordination with all stakeholders.”

The government and emergency services continue to grapple with the aftermath of the flash floods, which have left thousands in need of aid. As the situation evolves, the military remains the primary pillar of the response, working to navigate the logistical nightmares posed by the mountainous topography to reach those still trapped by the rising waters and landslides.
