In an industry often defined by legacy and networking, Ida Ali—the daughter of renowned filmmaker Imtiaz Ali—is carving out a distinctly independent path. With a lifetime of exposure to the nuances of storytelling, the budding director is proving that she prefers earning her stripes through merit rather than leveraging her family name.
Ida recently stepped into the director’s chair alongside her creative collaborator and podcast co-host, Kareema Barry. Together, the duo has launched their own production venture, marking their entry into filmmaking with a project titled On a Whim.
A Commitment to Creative Integrity
For Ida, the motivation behind her directorial debut was simple: a desire for artistic autonomy. “I had been wanting to direct something which is not related to any brand or any music video. I wanted to do something of my own,” she shared in a recent interview. Following the success of their collaborative podcast, the pair decided to test their mettle as filmmakers. The result was not just one, but two short films within a single month—On a Whim and GUL.
While many in her position might gravitate toward the resources and production houses readily available through her father’s extensive network, Ida has consciously chosen a different route. She believes that relying on “industry favors” diminishes the authenticity of the creative process.
“I don’t want anyone to do me any favors either,” Ida explained. “If some known name or production house is backing us, it kind of takes away from the project. I want everyone who comes on to a project to come on because they are excited about it. When I have something like that to offer to someone with a bigger name, then I would be very happy to work with them.”
By launching her own production company, Ida is ensuring that her early work is defined by genuine collaboration rather than nepotistic convenience. Her approach to filmmaking emphasizes that she is in no rush to seek shortcuts to success.
The Legacy Continues: Imtiaz Ali’s Latest Work
While Ida makes her own waves, her father continues to push narrative boundaries. Imtiaz Ali is currently garnering critical acclaim for his latest directorial effort, Main Vaapas Aaunga. The film offers a poignant look at the lasting scars of the Partition through the eyes of a 95-year-old man, played by the legendary Naseeruddin Shah.
As the protagonist struggles with a stroke and a fragmented memory while attempting to reach Pakistan, his grandson attempts to piece together a history that refuses to fade. Starring a stellar ensemble cast that includes Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina, and Sharvari, the film serves as a powerful reminder of how historical trauma continues to impact generations.
While the elder Ali explores the complexities of memory and borders, his daughter is focused on the future—one frame at a time, strictly on her own terms.
