Pakistan Coach Denies Knowledge of PCB’s Alleged “Walkout Threat” Amid Lord’s Controversy
LONDON – Pakistan head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed has distanced his squad from a brewing diplomatic and sporting row, insisting that he and his players were completely unaware of reports that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) threatened to abandon the ongoing Lord’s Test.
The controversy erupted during the lunch break on the opening day of the second Test between England and Pakistan. Reports surfaced suggesting that the PCB had issued a stern ultimatum to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), warning that the Pakistan team would withdraw from the match—and potentially the remainder of the three-Test tour—if Sky Sports proceeded with a scheduled interview featuring the sons of former Prime Minister and cricket legend Imran Khan.
Despite the alleged standoff, the Pakistan players returned to the field following the break, and the Test match continued without interruption.
Addressing the media following the conclusion of the second day’s play, Sarfaraz maintained that the dressing room was shielded from the high-stakes political maneuvering taking place behind the scenes.
“I don’t know anything. I’m just focusing on the match. You’re talking about the interview? We don’t know about the interview,” Sarfaraz stated. When pressed on whether there had been any actual possibility of the players refusing to continue, the coach remained dismissive of the drama, adding, “All are OK. We were having lunch at that time.”
The Interview and the Political Divide
The source of the friction was an interview conducted by former England captain and broadcaster Michael Atherton with Suleiman and Kasim Khan. The brothers utilized the platform to discuss their father’s current imprisonment, raising concerns regarding his treatment, security, and the perceived inaction of the UK government regarding his legal situation.
While a version of the interview was eventually broadcast internationally by Sky Sports, the segment was notably absent from domestic coverage in Pakistan. State broadcaster PTV, which airs the series using Sky’s international feed, opted not to air the conversation involving the Khan brothers.
The incident underscores the deeply polarized political climate surrounding the PCB. Current PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi holds a dual role as Pakistan’s interior minister, creating an environment where sporting decisions and government policy are inextricably linked.
Imran Khan, who remains a central figure in Pakistan’s national identity, led the country to its historic 1992 World Cup victory. Since his entry into politics and subsequent tenure as Prime Minister (2018–2022), he has remained a polarizing figure. He has been in custody since 2023 on corruption-related charges, all of which he continues to vehemently deny.
Focus Returns to the Pitch
While the boardroom drama threatened to overshadow the sporting action, the focus has since returned to the cricket. With the PCB’s Lord’s Test threat now firmly relegated to the periphery, Pakistan faces a steep mountain to climb.
At the end of the second day, England held a commanding position, reaching 81 for 3 in their second innings to move 261 runs ahead, putting the visitors under significant pressure as they look to salvage their position in the series.
