From Gold Rakhis to Gadgets: India’s Rakhi Shopping Goes Digital
BENGALURU: The traditional celebration of Raksha Bandhan is undergoing a radical digital transformation. As the festival approaches, India’s e-commerce landscape is witnessing a seismic shift, with consumers moving beyond customary threads and sweets to embrace a high-tech, premium shopping experience.
Recent data from major platforms, including Instamart, Meesho, Flipkart Minutes, and Amazon Now, highlights a booming trend where convenience and luxury collide. At the peak of the rush on Friday, Instamart reported a staggering 857 rakhis ordered every minute, underscoring the frenetic pace of modern festive preparations.
The Rise of Premium Gifting
The digital makeover of the festival is characterized by a shift toward high-value gifts. On Instamart, one Bengaluru-based shopper dropped a cool Rs 10,995 on five 24-karat gold-coin-studded rakhis. Meanwhile, in Gurugram, a customer curated a comprehensive basket—valued at over Rs 14,600—that featured a sophisticated blend of skincare, chocolates, toys, and traditional threads.
This premiumization is mirrored in the growth figures: Instamart saw a 300% year-on-year surge in Rakhi-related orders between August 21 and 28, with demand for designer rakhis climbing 130% and smartwatch orders nearly doubling.
Bridging the Metros and Beyond
While major hubs like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai continue to drive volume, the digital makeover of Rakhi is reaching the deepest corners of the country.
Meesho, which caters heavily to smaller towns, reported that 73% of its Rakhi orders originated from non-metro locations. Emerging markets like Dadri (Uttar Pradesh), Nabarangapur, and Kasganj saw explosive growth, indicating that the convenience of e-commerce has democratized access to festive gifting. Interestingly, these shoppers are favoring modern aesthetics, with bracelet-style rakhis and personalized name designs leading the sales charts.
Tech Meets Tradition
Quick-commerce platforms and major marketplaces are also competing to elevate the gifting experience through innovation:
- Personalization: Amazon Now has introduced NFC-enabled rakhis, allowing users to embed digital memories like photos, videos, and personalized messages into the physical gift.
- Rapid Delivery: Efficiency is the new standard, with Amazon delivering some orders in under five minutes.
- The “Everything” Basket: Beyond religious threads, platforms are reporting a massive spike in consumer electronics. Flipkart noted an 87% increase in sales of men’s kurtas, while phones, wireless earbuds, and gold coins remain top-tier choices for siblings.
A New Consumer Behavior
The collective data paints a clear picture: while quick-commerce is the go-to for urban dwellers managing last-minute needs and immediate gifting, traditional marketplaces are capturing more planned, long-term purchases across Tier-3 and Tier-4 cities.
With 58% of orders on platforms like Meesho being prepaid and a 72% increase in sellers listing Rakhi products, it is evident that Raksha Bandhan has evolved from a simple local exchange into a massive, organized, and highly digital retail phenomenon. Whether through a 24-karat gold token or an NFC-enabled message, the spirit of the festival remains intact, even if the method of delivery is now powered by algorithms and logistics networks.
