World Test Championship Hopes in Jeopardy: Srikkanth Lashes Out at India’s Colombo Blunder
India’s ambitions of securing a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final have been dealt a significant blow following a frustrating draw in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Despite holding a commanding position at the start of the final day, the visitors failed to claim the necessary four wickets to seal a series sweep, leaving legendary former captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth to issue a stark warning about the team’s qualification prospects.
A Missed Opportunity
Heading into the final day at the Sinhalese Sports Club, India appeared to be in total control. With Sri Lanka reeling at six wickets down and struggling to overcome a follow-on deficit, a 2-0 series victory seemed a mere formality. However, the script took a dramatic turn as Sonal Dinusha delivered a masterful performance. The Sri Lankan batter remained unbeaten on 133, anchoring the lower order and frustrating the Indian bowling attack to force a draw.
The stalemate means India walks away with a 1-0 series win, but the psychological and mathematical damage could be far-reaching. Currently sitting fifth in the WTC standings, India now faces an uphill battle to keep their final hopes alive.
The Math of Qualification
According to Srikkanth, the margin for error has vanished. With only seven Tests remaining in their current cycle, the path to the final has become treacherous.
“This draw will make it difficult for India to qualify for the WTC final. Even if India wins five or six of the last seven matches, they’ll have to depend on other results,” Srikkanth remarked on his YouTube channel. He specifically highlighted the upcoming high-stakes series against Australia, warning that assuming home advantage is a dangerous game.
“It’s questionable if India can beat Australia 5-0 at home. If we give rank turners in that series, Australia can also beat India,” he cautioned.
“Messed Up Big Time”
Srikkanth did not mince words regarding India’s inability to close out the match, citing a lack of clinical execution in the final sessions. While acknowledging that weather conditions provided some reprieve for the hosts, he insisted that the victory was well within India’s grasp.
“India messed up big time. Sonal Dinusha was amazing throughout the series. This is where you miss a bowler like Bumrah. You need a finishing bowler like him. Though rain helped Sri Lanka a bit, India should have won the match hands down,” Srikkanth added.

Dinusha’s twin centuries across the series served as a testament to his resilience, but for India, the Colombo draw acts as a stern wake-up call. To maintain control of their destiny, the team must now aim for near-perfection in their remaining fixtures.
