CNG Prices Surge in Delhi-NCR: Indraprastha Gas Ltd Announces Rs 3.89/kg Hike
New Delhi: Consumers in the National Capital Region (NCR) and several surrounding areas are set to face higher commuting and logistics costs as Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) has announced a significant hike in the retail price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
Effective from August 29, the price of CNG has been increased by Rs 3.89 per kilogram. This latest upward revision marks the fifth time this year that the city’s primary gas distributor has adjusted rates, reflecting the volatile nature of global energy markets.
Global Volatility Drives Local Costs
IGL has attributed the price hike directly to the mounting pressure from international markets. A significant portion of India’s gas supply is dependent on imports, and the sustained instability in the Middle East has led to a sharp increase in the cost of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
“With international LNG prices remaining elevated and the cost impact becoming increasingly significant, a calibrated revision of Rs 3.89 per kg has now become necessary to partially offset the increase in input gas cost,” IGL stated in an official release.
While current crude oil prices, hovering above $90 per barrel, remain below the $126-per-barrel peak seen during previous periods of geopolitical tension, the continued conflict has kept supply chains strained, forcing domestic distributors to pass on the rising costs to the end consumer.
Impact on Commuters and Businesses
The price increase is expected to have a ripple effect on the transport sector in Delhi-NCR. With a vast majority of the region’s public transport infrastructure—including auto-rickshaws, taxis, and small goods carriers—relying on CNG, the hike will likely put upward pressure on passenger fares and freight charges.
Revised City-Wise Rates
The revised rates vary across cities due to differing state-level Value Added Tax (VAT) structures, similar to the pricing models seen for petrol and diesel.
