Congress Leader Detained After Confronting Kerala Chief Minister’s Convoy in Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A high-tension political standoff unfolded in the state capital on Friday when a local Congress leader was taken into police custody following a confrontation with the convoy of Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan.

The incident occurred as the Chief Minister was en route to Chempazhanthy to attend a public event commemorating the birth anniversary of the renowned social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. As the convoy proceeded, it was brought to a halt by a group of supporters associated with a separate Sree Narayana Guru event being held in the Chenthi area.

A Heated Exchange

Video footage of the incident shows the convoy being stopped, prompting VD Satheesan to exit his vehicle. He was quickly confronted by Anil Kumar—a District Congress Committee (DCC) leader popularly known as “Chenthi Ani”—and his supporters. The two leaders engaged in a heated verbal exchange on the roadside, with Kumar reportedly questioning why the Chief Minister had failed to attend the event in Chenthi, which he claimed was a pre-arranged commitment.

The standoff lasted several minutes before the Chief Minister returned to his vehicle and departed the scene. Representatives from Mr. Satheesan’s office subsequently clarified that the event in Chenthi was never part of the Chief Minister’s official itinerary.

Legal Action and Allegations

Following the incident, local authorities registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Kumar. He faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for offenses including wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation, and the use of force to obstruct a public servant from discharging official duties.

According to the FIR, Kumar allegedly acted in an aggressive manner and threatened the Chief Minister, asking, “What will you do if I get angry?” The document further states that the crowd’s actions obstructed the police personnel tasked with securing the convoy.

Factionalism Alleged

Speaking to reporters while being taken for a medical examination, Kumar denied the accusation that he had physically blocked the vehicle. Instead, he criticized the Chief Minister’s reaction to the situation, likening the altercation to “college students fighting.” He further characterized the incident as a symptom of deeper internal fissures, stating, “It is part of the party’s group politics. Groupism is the problem.”

The situation has sparked a debate within the party ranks. DCC member Suhail Shajahan expressed strong disapproval of the arrest, maintaining that Kumar was simply attempting to welcome the Chief Minister. “Regardless of which group or faction they belong to, as a person, I am personally saddened to see a Congress worker like Anil, who risked his life for the party, get arrested in this manner,” Shajahan stated.

As the confrontation continues to draw public attention, organizers of the Chenthi event have released photographic evidence of a meeting held months ago, intended to document their invitation to the Chief Minister, further highlighting the growing disconnect within the state Congress leadership.
