Olympic Star Neeraj Chopra Ruled Out for Remainder of 2026 Season Due to Ankle Injury
India’s track and field icon and two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra has announced that he will miss the remainder of the 2026 athletics season after sustaining a significant ankle injury. The decision comes as a major blow to the 28-year-old athlete, who was preparing to defend his title at the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Chopra, who has become the face of Indian athletics, shared the news via a social media post on Saturday, expressing deep frustration at the timing of the injury.
“It’s disappointing, especially because I felt close to finding my rhythm,” Chopra wrote. “After a period of hard work, I finally felt I was gaining the momentum I had been looking for with a season’s best throw in Lausanne. Unfortunately, shortly after, I sustained a ligament tear in my ankle during training.”
The injury effectively ends what had been a promising campaign for the javelin thrower. Earlier this year, Chopra added to his impressive trophy cabinet by securing a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this past July.
Following consultations with his medical team and coaching staff, the decision was made to prioritize long-term health over immediate competition. “After discussions with my doctor and team, we’ve decided that I will sit out the rest of this season,” he added. “But, as they say, setbacks are part of the journey.”
