MotorLand Aragon witnessed a sensational display of speed on Saturday as Marco Bezzecchi delivered a masterclass in qualifying for the Michelin Grand Prix of Aragon. Despite battling physical pain, the Aprilia Racing star shattered the all-time lap record with two blistering 1:44s, ultimately securing pole position and denying reigning World Champion Marc Marquez a top start at one of his favorite hunting grounds.
Q2: A Duel for the Ages
The qualifying shootout lived up to the massive anticipation, with Bezzecchi and Marquez engaged in a high-stakes tactical and mechanical battle. Marquez set an early benchmark with a 1:45.136—a new track record at the time—but Bezzecchi responded immediately, dipping into the 1:44s for the first time in the session.
As the session reached its climax, Bezzecchi moved the goalposts once more, posting a stunning 1:44.962 to leave the field in his wake. Marc Marquez pushed his Ducati to the limit in a final, desperate attempt to reclaim the top spot. While the eight-time world champion clawed back time in the opening sectors, his challenge ended abruptly at Turn 14 when a front-end moment forced him to settle for second.
Joining the pair on the front row will be Alex Marquez, who secured third, ensuring that the brothers will be at the heart of the action when the lights go out.
Championship leader Jorge Martin faced a challenging start to his weekend, struggling with technical issues early in the session. After falling as low as P11, he managed to recover to fifth on the grid, placing himself just behind the Aprilia of Raul Fernandez. Pedro Acosta, who suffered a crash at Turn 8 while on a personal best lap, managed to salvage a sixth-place start.
The Path to Q2
Earlier in the day, the path to the front-row battle was paved by a tense Q1 session. Rookie sensation Diogo Moreira displayed incredible pace before suffering a crash at Turn 2, which ultimately didn’t cost him a spot in the final shootout. Francesco “Pecco” Bagnaia navigated the pressure expertly, climbing to the top of the timesheets to progress alongside the young Brazilian.
The result leaves a congested and highly competitive grid. With the Aragon MotoGP qualifying results now finalized, the focus shifts to the Tissot Sprint.
