Google’s AI Overviews Are Now Auto-Expanding, Pushing Traditional Search Results Further Down

Google is quietly rolling out a new interface change for its search engine that could fundamentally shift how users interact with results. According to recent reports, the company has begun automatically expanding its AI-generated summaries at the top of search pages, a move that pushes traditional blue-link results significantly further down the screen.

Previously, users would typically see a condensed AI Overview accompanied by a “Show more” button, allowing them to choose whether to engage with the generated text. Now, for select queries, Google is presenting the full AI response immediately, followed by an “Ask anything” follow-up prompt, relegating the familiar list of website links to a position well below the fold.

The Trade-off: Convenience vs. Scrolling

This shift is causing some users to perform more scrolling than they are accustomed to. By prioritizing the AI-generated content, Google is effectively treating its generative search feature as the primary destination for the user, rather than a bridge to external websites.

The triggers for this behavior appear inconsistent. Observations from early testers indicate that the auto-expansion is not a universal experience. While some queries consistently trigger the full-length AI response, the behavior can fluctuate across different browsers, accounts, and even individual search sessions. For example, queries regarding future tech or specific product recommendations have been noted to trigger the expanded view, though not with 100 percent reliability.

Google’s Strategy Behind the Change

Google maintains that this change is driven by user utility. In a statement provided to the press, Google spokesperson Jennifer Kutz explained that the company is utilizing a dynamic system to determine when an expanded summary provides the most value.

“For some queries, AI Overviews may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it’s most useful for people,” Kutz said. “Our research has shown that with this dynamic experience, users find Search more helpful and engage deeper in follow-up exploration.”

To mitigate potential frustration, the company has reportedly implemented a fail-safe mechanism: if a user begins scrolling down the page while the AI Overview is in the process of generating or expanding, the system will cancel the expansion to prevent the page from jumping and causing the user to lose their reading position.

The Future of Search

This update highlights Google’s ongoing commitment to integrating AI Overviews into the core search experience, even at the cost of traditional traffic patterns for publishers. By prioritizing direct answers over links, the company is betting that users prefer an “all-in-one” search experience that minimizes the need to click away from the results page.

Whether this trend continues toward full-page automation or settles back into a more balanced mix of AI and organic links remains to be seen. For now, users should expect a more immersive—and perhaps more thumb-heavy—browsing experience as Google continues to refine its AI-first approach to information retrieval.
