Gamescom Security Under Fire After Multiple Indie Developers Report Equipment Theft

COLOGNE, GERMANY – The 2026 edition of Gamescom, one of the world’s largest gaming industry gatherings, has been marred by a wave of overnight thefts targeting indie developers. Several studios, including the team behind the upcoming horror title Mimic, reported that their booths were raided, leading to the loss of critical hardware and sensitive project data.

Solo developer Ryan Laley, creator of Mimic, broke the news on social media after arriving at his booth to find his equipment gone. In an emotional video posted to X (formerly Twitter), Laley expressed feeling “defeated” after his Alienware 16X Aurora gaming laptop—the primary machine for his demos—was stolen. The theft forced him to cancel a full day of professional appointments.

“As an indie, solo dev, this stuff is expensive and hard to do all by yourself,” Laley said. “To have this happen is beyond frustrating; it’s heartbreaking.”

Laley is not alone in this crisis. Several other exhibitors, including publisher iam8bit and the team at Tessera Studios, have reported similar incidents. iam8bit noted that the theft of their laptops not only disrupted their busy schedule but also created significant anxiety regarding the potential leak of unfinished game builds. Tessera Studios reported that their booth cabinet was forcibly opened, resulting in the loss of multiple laptops and a Steam Deck containing proprietary information.

Industry Rallies Behind Affected Developers

Despite the grim circumstances, the gaming community has responded with an overwhelming show of solidarity. Following his initial report, Laley saw a massive influx of support from both fans and major industry players.

CD Projekt Red, the studio behind The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, reached out publicly to offer assistance, stating, “No choom should have to start from zero.” Furthermore, fellow developer Joe Henson—known as “Indie Game Joe”—stepped up to cover the cost of replacing Laley’s stolen hardware.

Laley described the reaction as “unreal and unbelievable,” noting that the outpouring of love served as a poignant reminder of the community’s core values. “I’m glad to raise a spotlight to security concerns that others have had too and encourage everyone to look out for each other,” he added.

Gamescom Responds to Security Concerns

Following inquiries from the media, Gamescom organizers issued an official statement addressing the theft reported during the event.

“We are aware of stolen hardware and take these reports very seriously and understand the frustration of affected exhibitors,” the organizers said in a statement. They emphasized that while they employ uniformed security throughout the venue, exhibitors are encouraged to insure equipment and, if necessary, book private booth security.

The event organizers characterized the thefts as “individual cases,” noting that while security remains a high priority, large-scale events are unfortunately prone to opportunistic individuals. They confirmed that all incidents have been reported to the police and that investigations are currently underway.

Moving Forward

For Laley, the experience has been a sobering look at the vulnerability of independent creators. While he remains at the show to network and connect with fellow developers, he has warned that he likely won’t hear from authorities regarding his stolen property for several weeks.

He is now urging fans to support the indie development community, which often operates on thin margins and with significant personal financial risk. “Making games is hard work,” Laley said. “Support the indie devs—they deserve it.”
