PCB Issues Directive to Pakistan Players Amidst Rising Controversy Over Imran Khan

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued a firm directive to the national team currently touring England, advising players to steer clear of public discourse regarding the imprisonment and health of former captain and Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The move follows heightened international scrutiny surrounding the 73-year-old cricket legend, who has been incarcerated at Adiala Jail since 2023 following convictions in various corruption cases—allegations he continues to vehemently deny.

Tensions Flare at Lord’s

The intersection of high-stakes cricket and domestic Pakistani politics reached a boiling point during the second Test at Lord’s. Broadcaster Sky Sports aired an interview with Imran Khan’s sons, Suleman and Kasim Khan, during the lunch interval. According to reports, the PCB expressed deep dissatisfaction with the segment, viewing it as a move to bring political content onto the cricketing stage.

While there were internal discussions regarding a potential protest—including speculation that the team might refuse to take the field—the board ultimately opted for a more measured diplomatic approach. The team was scheduled to attend a prestigious reception hosted by King Charles III, and the PCB remained mindful of maintaining cordial diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom.

Addressing the media during the controversy, Pakistan’s head coach, Azhar Mahmood, claimed the squad was largely unaware of the stir. “No, we don’t know anything about it. We were having lunch,” he stated when questioned about the broadcast and the subsequent board reaction.

Moin further encouraged his former peers to use their platforms to voice support. His appeal follows a similar statement from legendary batter Javed Miandad, who publicly defended his former teammate’s integrity.

Global Concern

The concerns regarding the former leader’s welfare have transcended national borders. A coalition of 22 former international captains—hailing from cricketing powerhouses including India, England, the West Indies, and New Zealand—have jointly written to Pakistan’s current Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif. The signatories are urging the government to provide adequate medical treatment and ensure constitutional safeguards for the jailed former premier.
