Deepti Sharma Joins Elite 150-T20I Club as India Opens Asia Cup Campaign
DUBAI: Indian cricket stalwart Deepti Sharma reached a significant career milestone on Sunday, becoming only the third player from her country to feature in 150 women’s T20 Internationals. The seasoned all-rounder achieved this feat during India’s Group A opener against Thailand at the Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2026.
By taking the field in Dubai, Deepti joined an exclusive club alongside captain Harmanpreet Kaur and star batter Smriti Mandhana. While Harmanpreet leads the national charts with 202 appearances and Mandhana follows with 171, Deepti’s entry into the 150-match circle also places her as just the 12th woman cricketer in the history of the sport to reach this landmark.
A Decade of Consistent Excellence
Since making her international debut over a decade ago, Deepti has evolved into one of the most indispensable assets for the Indian side. Heading into Sunday’s fixture, her T20I record boasted 1,270 runs and 168 wickets—a testament to her dual-threat capability. Whether providing crucial breakthroughs in the middle overs or stabilizing the innings under pressure, her tactical intelligence has remained a cornerstone of India’s white-ball strategy.
Her impact is perhaps most visible in the Asia Cup, where she has established a reputation for dominance. Having competed in every edition since her debut in 2018, Deepti has historically been a force with the ball, finishing as the leading wicket-taker in both the 2022 and 2024 editions of the tournament. With 26 career wickets in the competition, she remains a primary threat to opposing batting lineups, particularly in the spin-friendly conditions of Dubai.
New Beginnings and Strategic Shifts
The match against Thailand also served as a stage for debutante Pratika Rawal, who was handed her maiden T20I cap by captain Harmanpreet Kaur. Rawal joins the squad as a replacement for Jemimah Rodrigues, who was unfortunately sidelined due to a right hamstring injury.
Reflecting on the team’s goals, Harmanpreet emphasized a shift in mindset as India looks to move past a period of inconsistency, having faced a challenging run earlier this year. “Playing good cricket is what we want to do. We have spoken about being ruthless, and this is an important tournament for us,” the skipper noted ahead of the match.
As the tournament progresses, the focus remains on whether India can translate their immense individual experience—highlighted by Deepti Sharma’s longevity—into a consistent title-winning campaign. Thailand, having won the toss and chosen to bowl, signaled their intent to challenge the favorites early, setting the stage for what promises to be a competitive road to the trophy.
