Beyond the Board: Chess.com Launches Poker Platform ‘Gambit’
After nearly two decades of defining the online chess landscape, the industry leader is making its most significant strategic pivot to date. Chess.com has officially entered the world of card games with the beta launch of Gambit, a dedicated platform designed to teach poker without the risks associated with real-money gambling.
The move marks a broader shift for the company, which aims to leverage its expertise in skill-based gaming to expand into other classic disciplines.
A Learning-First Approach
Albert Cheng, Chief Growth Officer at Chess.com, explains that the company selected poker as its first companion site because the game shares the same DNA as chess: a deep emphasis on social interaction, continuous learning, and strategic development.
Crucially, Gambit is positioning itself as an alternative to the traditional online poker industry. “Real money is the problem we built Gambit to get away from,” Cheng noted. “The whole industry makes money when beginners lose. We’d rather build a place where people can actually learn.”
By eschewing real-money stakes, Gambit focuses entirely on skill acquisition. The site mirrors the familiar, user-friendly design of Chess.com, featuring interactive lessons, tournament play, bot matches, and a comprehensive review mode that allows users to analyze their past hands. Fans of the original site will even recognize familiar faces—such as the beloved beginner-level bot “Martin”—who now appears on the new platform to help novices get their footing.
Data-Driven Motivation
To keep players engaged without the pull of financial wagers, Gambit has implemented an Elo-style rating system. According to Cheng, this metric provides the necessary “counterbalance” to non-monetary play, giving users a clear way to track their progress and maintain a competitive, high-quality environment.
This rating system is also the cornerstone of the site’s business model. While playing is free, Gambit follows the successful subscription framework used by Chess.com: players pay to unlock advanced features, such as deep-dive game analysis and unlimited access to training tools, creating a pathway for dedicated students of the game to invest in their improvement.
The AI Advantage
The rapid expansion of the Chess.com ecosystem has been fueled by the strategic use of artificial intelligence. Cheng revealed that a small, agile team was able to move Gambit from initial prototype to public beta in under a year.
“The biggest advantage [of AI] is essentially being able to read our existing codebase and our design system and apply consistent patterns… and do so quickly,” said Cheng. While the company relies on human experts for high-level brand and feature design, AI has acted as a “superpower” in accelerating development, allowing the team to maintain their high standards without needing to scale the company’s workforce exponentially.
What Comes Next?
Gambit is only the beginning. With the successful deployment of this “playbook,” Chess.com is already exploring further entries into other classic games, including backgammon, mahjong, and go. The company is actively targeting games with “classic durability” and established communities.
As the platform matures, Chess.com is shifting its focus to social growth and creator partnerships. To kick off this new chapter, the company will host its first-ever “Gambit Cup” livestream on August 31st at 12:00 PM ET. The event will feature Chess.com co-founder Danny Rensch alongside prominent content creator Alexandra Botez, signaling a concerted effort to bring the same community-driven energy to poker that has made chess a massive streaming success.
