A Folding iPhone at Last? What to Expect From Apple’s Surprise and Shine Fall Event

A New Era for Apple: Leadership Transition and the Foldable Future at September’s ‘Surprise and Shine’ Event

After months of intense speculation and industry leaks, Apple is preparing to host its much-anticipated fall hardware showcase. The “Surprise and Shine” event, scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9, promises to be one of the most significant pivots in the company’s recent history, marking not only a shift in product strategy but a monumental change in leadership.

A Changing of the Guard

This year’s event carries a distinct sentimental weight. In a historic transition, Tim Cook, who has helmed Apple for nearly 15 years following Steve Jobs’ departure in 2011, officially steps down. John Ternus, Apple’s longtime hardware engineering chief, is set to ascend to the CEO role just days before the unveiling, signaling a new chapter for the Cupertino giant.

A Strategic Shift: The Rise of the Foldable

In a move that breaks from its decade-long tradition, Apple is reportedly planning an extended rollout for its smartphone lineup. Sources suggest the company will hold off on releasing the standard iPhone 18 series until the spring of 2027, focusing its September keynote entirely on the high-end Pro models and a new, flagship device.

Taking center stage will be the company’s long-rumored entry into the foldable market, tentatively dubbed the “iPhone Ultra.” Unlike the vertical flip phones of the past, early reports indicate a “book-style” design that unfolds into a compact tablet—similar in form factor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8. While the device is expected to command a premium price tag of roughly $2,000, it represents Apple’s aggressive attempt to capture the luxury segment of the market.

Beyond the foldable, the standard iPhone 18 Ultra and Pro Max variants are expected to feature enhanced battery performance, variable-aperture camera systems, and the debut of the A20 processor.

AI Integration and Pricing Pressures

The backdrop of this launch is a challenging economic environment. Apple has recently increased prices across its Mac and iPad portfolios, citing supply chain volatility and the surging cost of memory chips driven by the global AI race. These pressures, combined with increased subscription costs for Apple Music and Apple TV, have left consumers wary of further price hikes.

However, the technology remains cutting-edge. The new devices will launch with a full suite of updated operating systems, including iOS 27 and MacOS Golden Gate, both of which feature deep integration with the anticipated “Siri AI” revamp.

Wearables and Sound: Watch and AirPods Updates

The “Surprise and Shine” event is also expected to be a major day for wearables. Analysts are “all but certain” that the Apple Watch Series 12 will make its debut, likely featuring more energy-efficient display technology and potentially the inclusion of Touch ID integration. While health-tracking features like blood pressure monitoring are in development, their inclusion remains speculative.

Meanwhile, in the audio space, the next generation of AirPods could introduce a controversial feature: a tiny infrared camera. Designed not for photography but for “visual intelligence,” the tech is intended to allow the earbuds to scan the physical environment to provide context-aware AI assistance. This development is sure to spark intense debate regarding privacy, a cornerstone of Apple’s marketing identity.

As Apple balances its AI ambitions with its reputation for privacy and luxury, all eyes will be on John Ternus. His performance on the stage this September will likely define the trajectory of the company for the remainder of the decade.
