Assam Government Approves Proton Beam Cancer Therapy Facility

Assam Boosts Healthcare and Infrastructure with Massive Rs 600-Crore Investment Plan

GUWAHATI: In a significant push to modernize the state’s medical infrastructure and overall economic landscape, the Assam Cabinet has officially approved a project to establish a state-of-the-art Proton Beam Therapy facility, with an estimated investment of Rs 600 crore.

This high-end oncology center is part of a comprehensive capital expenditure roadmap unveiled by the state government, targeting key pillars of growth including healthcare, education, transportation, power, housing, and industrial development.

Revolutionizing Cancer Care

The introduction of Proton Beam Therapy marks a major milestone for healthcare in the Northeast. As a highly precise form of radiation treatment, the facility is expected to significantly improve clinical outcomes for cancer patients, sparing healthy tissue and reducing side effects. Beyond this flagship health initiative, the Cabinet has also greenlit projects to upgrade primary healthcare centers, ensuring that quality medical services are accessible at the grassroots level.

Scaling Infrastructure Across Sectors

The government’s expansive infrastructure agenda extends well beyond the health sector:

  • Education: New infrastructure proposals have been cleared for the renovation and modernization of schools and Anganwadi centers.
  • Empowerment: The cabinet has approved specific facilities designed to support women, including the construction of women-only markets and secure hostel accommodations.
  • Connectivity and Energy: Substantial investments are slated for the state’s road network and power infrastructure, both of which are considered vital for sustained industrial growth.
  • Industrial Growth: To attract fresh private investment, the government is prioritizing the development of robust industrial infrastructure, creating an environment that supports business operations and job creation.

Strengthening Climate Resilience

Acknowledging the recurring challenges posed by the monsoon season, the government has also placed a strong emphasis on disaster management. The Cabinet has proposed a series of projects to strengthen embankments in vulnerable areas. These efforts are designed to mitigate the recurring damage caused by floods to residential homes, critical road networks, and agricultural farmland.

Strategic Funding Model

To ensure the timely execution of these ambitious projects, the government has devised a multi-pronged funding strategy. Resources will be drawn from the state’s internal revenues, low-interest borrowings from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), and various development schemes managed by the Central government.

By balancing immediate infrastructure needs with long-term technological investments in health, the Assam government aims to set a new benchmark for regional development and public service delivery.
