Google Raises Price of TV Streamer as Component Costs Surge Across Hardware Lineup

In a move that has caught many consumers by surprise, Google has quietly implemented a significant price hike for its premium streaming hardware. The Google TV Streamer, which debuted in 2024 with a $99.99 price tag, has seen its cost jump by 50%, bringing the new retail price to $149.99.

A New Market Reality

The sudden adjustment is part of a broader trend within Google’s hardware division. The company officially confirmed that it is raising prices across several of its smart home products, including select Nest cameras and video doorbells, citing the rising cost of essential components.

Industry analysts have pointed to the increasing expense of memory—specifically RAM—as a primary driver for these shifts. This trend is not isolated to the living room; recent reports suggest that upcoming hardware, such as the Pixel 11 series and the Pixel Watch 5, are already being positioned to reflect these higher production costs.

The Google TV Streamer, which features 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, has been a central piece of Google’s push to unify the smart home experience. Despite the Google TV Streamer price increase, the device remains a key player in the ecosystem.

Availability and Retail Discrepancies

The $149.99 price is currently live on both the official Google Store and major retailers like Best Buy. However, inventory remains inconsistent across the market. As of Monday afternoon, several other retailers—most notably Amazon—were still listing the device at its original $99.99 price point. Consumers looking to pick up the streamer may still find success searching for lingering older stock at legacy pricing, though this window is expected to close quickly.

Google’s Official Stance

In a statement provided to the press, a Google spokesperson acknowledged the difficult decision to adjust pricing:

“Due to rising component costs, we are adjusting the U.S. pricing of select Google Nest cameras, doorbells and Google TV streamer 4K, effective August 31. We remain committed to providing our customers with industry-leading smart home security and continuous feature updates.”

What This Means for Consumers

While the Google Home Speaker appears to be immune to this specific wave of price hikes—likely because Google preemptively adjusted its pricing during its June launch—the broader smart home catalog is clearly undergoing a transition.

For those who rely on the Google ecosystem, the price hike serves as a stark reminder of how supply chain fluctuations in the semiconductor and memory sectors directly impact the consumer’s wallet. As manufacturers struggle to maintain margins amidst these rising costs, the era of $99 flagship streaming boxes may be coming to an end.
