Double Fine Returns to Kickstarter Roots: Is a $100 Million Brütal Legend 2 Sequel on the Horizon?
In a nostalgic nod to its crowdfunding roots, independent studio Double Fine has returned to Kickstarter—and it has brought a bold, albeit tongue-in-cheek, proposition to the table. Following its recent separation from Xbox, the developer has launched a new campaign to fund a series of game jams, but the eye-catching highlight is a staggering $100 million stretch goal for a sequel to the cult-classic title, Brütal Legend.
A New Chapter for Double Fine
Double Fine’s return to Kickstarter marks a significant transition for the studio. Earlier this year, the company split from its parent organization, Xbox, amidst a wave of industry-wide layoffs and studio closures. As it navigates the challenging landscape of independent game development, the studio is utilizing crowdfunding not just for specific titles, but to keep the lights on and the creative gears turning while it pursues funding for larger, long-term projects.
The studio has noted on X (formerly Twitter) that it is actively working on “bigger games,” emphasizing that the current Kickstarter serves as a vital bridge in an industry where venture capital is increasingly risk-averse and traditional publishers are becoming more selective with their investments.
The $100 Million Question
At the time of writing, the current campaign has raised approximately $284,000 of its $400,000 baseline goal. While the campaign is seeing steady support for its game jam initiatives, the conversation has been dominated by the developer’s ambitious stretch goal for Brütal Legend 2.
First released in 2009, Brütal Legend remains a beloved entry in Double Fine’s catalog. Featuring the voice and likeness of Jack Black as Eddie Riggs, a roadie thrust into a high-fantasy world heavily influenced by the aesthetic of heavy metal album covers, the game sold 1.4 million copies by 2011 and fostered a dedicated cult following.
While the $100 million figure is almost certainly a satirical jab at the ballooning costs of modern AAA game development, it highlights a grim reality: in today’s market, the astronomical budgets required to produce a title of that scale make such a request less of a joke and more of a commentary on the current state of the industry.
The Path Forward
While hitting a nine-figure sum via Kickstarter is virtually unheard of in the gaming space, the campaign underscores the ongoing struggle independent developers face in a post-layoff environment. Double Fine is leaning into its history—having successfully used the platform to fund the development of Broken Age in the past—to maintain its independence.
Whether or not the studio reaches its most ambitious milestones, the campaign serves as a reminder of the passion the developer still commands within the community. As the studio works to secure its future, fans are eager to see which of the 25 proposed games from the current jam will rise to the top.
