ASUS and MSI Sell Out Entire Initial Inventory of NVIDIA “RTX Spark” Laptops Before Launch
In a remarkable display of market anticipation—or perhaps constrained supply—news emerging from Taiwan indicates that both ASUS and MSI have completely sold out their initial production run of laptops featuring the highly anticipated NVIDIA “RTX Spark” SoC. Despite no units having officially shipped to consumers yet, the entire initial stock has been spoken for, signaling a frantic scramble for the upcoming Arm-based hardware.
The rapid depletion of inventory is being attributed to a notably sparse initial allocation of the chips, which were co-developed by NVIDIA and MediaTek. According to reports from Investor.com.tw, ASUS and MSI were collectively allocated 100,000 units of the N1 and N1x variants of the SoC for their first production cycle. While 100,000 units might appear substantial to the casual observer, it represents a limited volume when divided between two major industry players, potentially creating the supply bottleneck that led to the “sold out” status.
It remains unclear how many units were allocated to other key launch partners, including Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Microsoft. Furthermore, industry observers are tracking Acer and Gigabyte, who are reportedly slated to join the “RTX Spark” ecosystem in subsequent launch waves.
Scaling Up for Future Demand
NVIDIA appears to be preparing for a significant ramp-up in production. Sources indicate that the semiconductor giant plans to provide a substantially larger allocation for the next production run, estimated to be between 300,000 and 500,000 chips.
The market performance of these devices will be a critical test for the partnership. With an expected starting MSRP hovering around US$3,500 in the Taiwanese market, these machines are positioned firmly in the ultra-premium segment. Some analysts question whether there is enough consumer demand to justify such a high entry price, suggesting that either the initial stock levels were intentionally kept low to manage risk, or that there are undisclosed performance metrics and capabilities that justify the steep premium.
As the industry pivots toward Arm-based computing, the reception of these NVIDIA RTX Spark laptops will serve as a bellwether for NVIDIA’s long-term strategy in the mobile space.
