Wigan to Host Public Farewell for Rugby League Icon Sir Billy Boston
The rugby world is preparing to bid a final, emotional farewell to one of its greatest ever players, Sir Billy Boston, with funeral arrangements now confirmed at his spiritual home, the Brick Community Stadium in Wigan.
The legendary Welshman, who cemented his status as a titan of the sport during a glittering career in the north of England, passed away last week at the age of 92. His passing came just days after the funeral of Lady Joan, his wife of 70 years, prompting an outpouring of grief from across the rugby community.
Born in Cardiff’s historic Tiger Bay in 1934, Sir Billy began his journey in rugby union with Neath and Pontypridd. However, it was his 1953 move to rugby league giants Wigan that transformed him into a sporting immortal. Over his storied career, he recorded a staggering 571 tries in 562 first-class matches, including 478 tries for Wigan alone, securing three Challenge Cups and World Cup glory with Great Britain in 1960.
To honor his unparalleled contribution to the game, a huge stadium funeral will be held on Thursday, September 10, at the Brick Community Stadium.
A Community United in Grief
The service, scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., will see Sir Billy make a final, symbolic journey down the stadium tunnel. While a limited number of supporters have been invited to attend the service in the West Stand—with a £1 donation requested to benefit the Wigan & Leigh Hospice—thousands more are expected to line the streets to pay their respects as the funeral cortege makes its way through the town.
Attendees have been asked to wear traditional funeral attire, though the family has welcomed the inclusion of cherry red accents—the iconic colors of the Wigan Warriors—to honor his legacy. For those unable to attend in person, the club will provide a free live stream of the service via Wigan TV. A private burial will follow the stadium proceedings.
Honoring the Legend
The announcement follows a series of poignant tributes held during Wigan’s recent Super League clash against Hull KR. In a moving display, the stadium fell into complete silence, while Sky Sports dedicated its pre-match coverage to the winger. A giant banner featuring Sir Billy in his famous ‘2’ jersey was brought onto the pitch, and the throne he occupied after becoming the sport’s first knight of the realm was placed on the turf, adorned with a Wigan jersey by his son, Stephen.
In a final nod to their hero, the Wigan players took the field with ‘Billy’ emblazoned on their shirts, delivering a dominant 46-0 victory that served as a fitting tribute to the man who defined an era for the club and the sport at large.
