India Condemns Destruction of Historic Hindu Temple in Pakistan, Demands Accountability
New Delhi: The Indian government has issued a sharp condemnation following reports of the destruction of a century-old Hindu temple in the Narowal region of Pakistan. Describing the incident as an act of “reprehensible vandalism,” New Delhi has called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the matter.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the incident during a media briefing on Wednesday, expressing deep concern over the reports emanating from village Siraj. He characterized the event as a distressing indicator of the deteriorating environment for minority communities within Pakistan.
“We have noted with deep concern the disturbing reports of the destruction of a historic Hindu temple in village Siraj, Narowal, Pakistan. We unequivocally condemn this reprehensible act of vandalism against a century-old minority place of worship,” Jaiswal stated.
The Ministry criticized the Pakistani authorities for their perceived inaction, noting that the “apparent apathy” and failure to protect the sacred site is deeply alarming. According to the Ministry, such incidents serve as a “stark reminder” of the ongoing vulnerability of minority populations and the frequent, egregious violations of their religious freedoms and cultural heritage across the border.
In its official response, New Delhi outlined clear expectations for Islamabad:
- Prompt Investigation: The Indian government has demanded that Pakistan conduct a swift, transparent probe to identify those responsible.
- Accountability: Authorities must ensure that all individuals involved in the destruction of the site are held fully accountable under the law.
- Restoration: New Delhi has urged Pakistan to take immediate remedial measures to restore the desecrated temple to its former state.
- Obligation to Minorities: Emphasizing the primary duty of any sovereign state, India reminded Pakistan of its fundamental obligation to guarantee the safety, security, and well-being of all minority citizens and their cultural heritage.
This incident highlights the growing diplomatic friction regarding the treatment of religious minorities in the region.
