Sony Sets November Release for Epic Indian Spectacle ‘Ramayana’
The timeless Indian epic Ramayana is officially set to make its grand debut on the global stage this fall. Sony Pictures has announced a November 6, 2024, theatrical release date for the highly anticipated project, marking a significant milestone for Indian cinema’s expansion into international markets.
Sony has secured the global distribution rights for the film, excluding India, where the production house Prime Focus Studios will oversee the release. To ensure the story resonates with diverse audiences, the film is slated to be distributed in multiple languages, tailored specifically to various local markets across the globe.
A Legendary Tale Reimagined
Widely regarded as one of humanity’s oldest and most profound stories, the Ramayana is an ancient epic poem that traces the journey of Prince Rama. The narrative follows his years of exile and the subsequent conflict sparked by the kidnapping of his wife, Sita, by the formidable demon king Ravana.
The cinematic adaptation is helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari. The film boasts a powerhouse cast featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, and Sai Pallavi, who are expected to bring depth and intensity to the iconic roles.
A World-Class Creative Team
The production has assembled an A-list crew to match the scale of the epic narrative. The musical landscape of the film will be crafted by Academy Award-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman, promising a soaring, cross-cultural soundscape. The technical prowess behind the lens is equally impressive, with action choreography led by industry veterans Terry Notary and Guy Norris, and production design overseen by Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal.

The ambitious project is produced by Namit Malhotra, the founder of the globally renowned visual effects powerhouse DNEG. Malhotra’s portfolio includes critical contributions to blockbuster spectacles such as Denis Villeneuve’s Dune franchise and several of Christopher Nolan’s masterpieces, including Interstellar and Tenet.
When the partnership with Sony was first announced in July, Malhotra emphasized the gravity of the project. “For generations, the Ramayana has inspired people through its timeless humanity and enduring values,” Malhotra said in a statement. “Our ambition has always been to honor that legacy while creating a cinematic experience worthy of audiences everywhere.”
