Maersk Pioneers Wind-Assisted Propulsion with Landmark Rotor Sail Pilot

COPENHAGEN – In a significant move toward decarbonizing the global supply chain, shipping giant Maersk has announced a landmark agreement to install an Anemoi rotor sail on one of its container vessels. This deployment marks a historic first for the container sector, which has historically struggled to integrate wind-assisted propulsion technology due to severe deck space limitations.

The project will see the installation of a massive rotor sail—measuring 35 meters in height with a five-meter diameter—designed to be fully integrated into the vessel’s existing onboard systems. While rotor sails have already gained traction as an effective fuel-saving measure for bulk carriers and tankers, their application on container ships has remained elusive until now.

Unlike traditional installations seen on bulkers and tankers, which often feature multiple units lined along the deck, the Maersk pilot will feature a single, strategically placed unit on the vessel’s bow. This design adjustment is critical for container vessels, where every square meter of deck space is optimized for cargo capacity.

Bridging the Efficiency Gap

The adoption of this technology is part of a broader industry push to reduce carbon intensity. By harnessing wind energy to provide additional thrust, rotor sails can significantly lower fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

“Wind-assisted propulsion is one of several promising maritime solutions with the potential to improve vessel efficiency and reduce emissions,” said Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology at Maersk. “It has already been tested in other parts of the shipping sector, and we see this pilot with Anemoi as a valuable opportunity to build practical experience and assess its relevance for our fleet and for container shipping more broadly.”

Looking Ahead

The installation is scheduled to take place in mid-2027. For Maersk, this pilot serves as a “real-world laboratory” to determine if wind-assisted propulsion can offer a scalable, viable pathway for the container industry to meet increasingly stringent international environmental regulations.

As the maritime sector faces mounting pressure to achieve net-zero targets, this partnership between Maersk and Anemoi represents a vital step in testing innovative hardware that can be retrofitted to existing fleets. If successful, the trial could pave the way for a new era of wind-supported container transit, proving that even the most space-constrained vessel designs can benefit from renewable, wind-assisted technology.
