EnQuest CEO Confirms Interest in Acquiring BP’s North Sea Assets

U.K.-based energy firm EnQuest has officially signaled its intent to acquire BP’s extensive oil and gas portfolio in the North Sea, marking a potential consolidation move within the aging, yet strategically vital, energy basin.

Amjad Bseisu, CEO of EnQuest, confirmed his company’s interest in the assets during an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” on Thursday. His comments follow BP’s announcement on July 31 that it had initiated a formal process to divest its U.K. North Sea business, a move that would represent a significant strategic withdrawal for the oil major after 60 years of operations in the region.

When asked directly if EnQuest—which specializes in the U.K. Continental Shelf—would bid for the portfolio, Bseisu answered, “yes.”

“There’s only a handful of companies left, so there’s only a handful of companies that would be interested,” Bseisu noted, emphasizing the limited pool of operators capable of managing such complex offshore infrastructure.

A Critical Shift for the North Sea

BP’s potential exit is viewed as a major pivot for the company. Its current North Sea footprint comprises five major production hubs: Andrew and ETAP in the central North Sea, alongside the west of Shetland assets of Glen Lyon, Clair, and Clair Ridge. Together, these sites employ approximately 1,100 people.

For EnQuest, which has previously collaborated with the oil major—most notably in a 2017 deal where it acquired a 25% stake in the Magnus oil field and associated infrastructure—the acquisition would be a natural extension of its regional strategy.

Advocacy for Energy Security

Beyond the potential deal, Bseisu highlighted the broader challenges facing the British energy market. He pointed out that the U.K. now imports roughly half of its total energy requirements, a reliance he argues has exacerbated costs for consumers.

“There is still a tremendous opportunity” in the U.K. oil and gas sector, Bseisu stated, urging the government to provide greater support for the development of domestic resources to curb energy dependence.

Financial Standing

The expression of interest comes as EnQuest continues to demonstrate operational resilience. In its latest financial update, the company reported an adjusted pre-tax profit of $54.6 million for the first half of the year, backed by $529.9 million in revenue and a 9% increase in production.

As the industry navigates the energy transition, the fate of the BP North Sea oil and gas business remains a focal point for investors, with analysts watching closely to see which operators have the capital and technical expertise to take over these legacy assets.
