India Ready to Mediate in Ukraine Conflict, EAM Jaishankar Says During Kyiv Visit

KYIV — External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, currently on a high-level diplomatic visit to Ukraine, has reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to peace, declaring that India stands ready to assist in any way possible to bring an end to the protracted war between Russia and Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday alongside his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, the minister emphasized that India remains a steadfast advocate for a resolution achieved through dialogue and diplomacy.

“If India can be of any help, in any manner, we are there,” Jaishankar stated, signaling a potential willingness to act as a mediator should the involved parties seek support.

Focus on Regional Security and Shipping

Beyond the broader push for peace, the ministers engaged in detailed discussions regarding the safety of international waters. Jaishankar confirmed that the two leaders addressed the escalating frequency of attacks on commercial shipping in the Black Sea—a critical maritime route for global food security and economic stability.

The visit comes at a sensitive time, as the conflict continues to have a direct impact on Indian nationals. Recent reports have highlighted the tragic loss of an Indian life and the injury of another following Russian attacks, underscoring the risks posed by the ongoing hostilities. These incidents follow previous security alerts issued by the Indian government after vessels with Indian crew members were targeted at the Odesa port.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that the primary objective of the visit is to bolster bilateral relations. In addition to his talks with Minister Sybiha, Jaishankar is scheduled to hold consultations with Polish Deputy Prime Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.

“The visit will focus on enhancing bilateral relations and also provide an opportunity to exchange views on regional developments and issues of mutual interest,” the official statement read.
