The Untold Story of ‘Swades’: How Shah Rukh Khan Replaced Aamir Khan in the Iconic Drama
Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades is widely regarded today as a cinematic masterpiece and perhaps the most nuanced performance of Shah Rukh Khan’s illustrious career. However, the path to bringing the story of NASA scientist Mohan Bhargava to the screen was fraught with unexpected turns and a dramatic casting history.
Recent revelations from actor and writer Amin Hajee, who served on the writing team for Swades and famously played Bagha in Lagaan, have shed light on how the project, originally titled Desh, was initially tailored for a different superstar.
Aamir Khan’s Original Vision
According to Hajee, Swades was conceived immediately following the massive success of Lagaan. The plan was for Ashutosh Gowariker to reunite with Aamir Khan, who was also slated to produce the film under his banner, Aamir Khan Productions.
“At that time, Aamir was supposed to play Shah Rukh Khan’s role. It was originally Aamir, always, from the start,” Hajee shared in a conversation with Siddharth Kannan.
The transition occurred not because of a creative fallout, but due to logistical constraints and script development timelines. While Aamir admired the film’s premise, he had reservations about the screenplay. Given Aamir’s reputation for focusing on one project at a time and his meticulous approach to development, the timeline required for the script revisions did not align with the director’s schedule.
“Aamir was very kind. He said, ‘Okay, I will still produce it. You decide who you want to play that role,’” Hajee explained, clarifying that Aamir voluntarily stepped aside to allow the film to move forward.
The Audition Trail: From Hrithik to Madhavan
With the lead role vacant, the search for a new lead began. The production team explored several high-profile options, including Hrithik Roshan, who was given a narration. Interestingly, actor R. Madhavan also auditioned for the role, leaving a lasting impression on the creative team.
“Madhavan also gave the audition—and what an audition. He killed it. He is a great actor,” Hajee recalled, noting the high quality of the contenders.
The Turning Point: Shah Rukh Khan Steps In
The trajectory of the film shifted permanently during a screening of Lagaan at Adlabs in Film City. Shah Rukh Khan, who was in attendance, was so moved by the film that he expressed an immediate desire to collaborate with Gowariker.
“He said, ‘I should be in Ashu’s next film. My father was a freedom fighter. I should do Desh. I should be Mohan Bhargava,’” Hajee recounted. Shah Rukh contacted the director directly, emphasizing his eagerness to join the project.
Hajee also noted that Shah Rukh had a unique intuition about roles associated with Aamir. He often felt a professional kinship with scripts that Aamir passed on, citing Darr as another prime example of a film that transitioned from Aamir to him with successful results. “The film that Aamir couldn’t do, I did without reading the script because I knew that must be great,” Shah Rukh had reportedly told the team.
A Lasting Legacy
Though Swades saw a modest response at the box office upon its 2004 release, it has since ascended to “cult classic” status. The film stands as a testament to the unpredictable nature of Bollywood casting. What began as an Aamir Khan project was transformed by Shah Rukh Khan’s earnest performance into a defining chapter of Indian cinema—a perfect example of how fate and creative timing can rewrite the history of a film.
