PlayStation Fans Flood State of Play Chat with Demands to Keep Physical Media Alive

The latest PlayStation State of Play presentation was intended to be a showcase of upcoming gaming titles, but for many viewers, it served as a digital picket line. As Sony hosted its first major showcase since confirming the end of new physical game discs, the live chat feeds on YouTube and Twitch were overtaken by a coordinated wave of protest from frustrated fans.

Throughout the event, the chat streams were dominated by two primary slogans: “D3”—a call for the development of Destiny 3—and “No disc, no buy,” a rallying cry for players committed to preserving physical media.

These slogans have evolved into catch-all expressions of discontent regarding the current state of the PlayStation ecosystem. Beyond the specific anger over the transition to an all-digital future, many fans are expressing broader frustration with the current console generation, citing rising hardware and software prices, as well as Sony’s heavy investment in live-service titles that have often failed to resonate with the core community.

The tension comes on the heels of a July announcement that signaled the beginning of the end for physical game production ahead of the eventual PS6 launch. The recent State of Play marked the first major public event where the community could collectively confront the company, following a week-long attempt by some fans to organize a boycott of the platform.

Despite the intensity of the pushback, Sony remains unmoved. During a recent earnings call, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao addressed the controversy, suggesting that the decision to sunset physical media was made after extensive deliberation.

“We put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this—and we came to this conclusion, and we’re going to cautiously move this forward,” Tao said. “And to this decision, we have received various opinions and people have strong views, and we understand that the community has put forth those views to us.”

Tao acknowledged that games are deeply tied to the “fond memories” of players and noted that Sony recognizes the emotional weight of these decisions. However, she emphasized that the company’s focus is now firmly on the “future digital ecosystem.”

“How do we engage the gamers is something that we would like to continue to explore,” she added.

A month after those comments, the State of Play makes it clear that the calculus at Sony headquarters has not changed. As the company continues to gut the infrastructure surrounding titles like Destiny 2 and lean into a digital-only roadmap, the friction between PlayStation leadership and its vocal, tradition-minded fanbase shows no sign of cooling down.
