For bank customers across India, planning essential financial errands for Friday requires a bit of foresight. According to the latest notification from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banking operations will be suspended across several states and Union territories on September 4, 2026, in observance of Krishna Janmashtami, the widely celebrated festival marking the birth of Lord Krishna.
It is important to note that these closures are not nationwide. Because bank holidays in India are determined on a state-by-state and city-by-city basis, a branch may be closed in one region while remaining fully operational in another.
States and UTs Observing a Holiday on September 4
As per the RBI holiday calendar, the following locations will see banks remain closed:
- States: Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Rajasthan, Kerala, West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.
- Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Chandigarh.
Customers are advised to cross-check their specific local branch status before heading out for in-person tasks, such as cheque clearing, locker access, or physical document submission.
Digital Banking Remains Available
While physical branch services will be paused in these regions, the digital banking ecosystem remains unaffected. Customers can continue to utilize UPI, mobile banking applications, and net banking platforms for fund transfers and bill payments without interruption. Additionally, ATMs are expected to remain functional for routine cash withdrawals and other self-service transactions.

The month of September features several regional holidays that may affect banking operations. Customers should take note of the following dates:
- September 11: Banks closed in Rajasthan (Jaipur Municipal Corporation jurisdiction) for elections.
- September 12: Banks closed in Assam for the Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva.
- September 14: Closures in Maharashtra, Odisha, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Telangana, Goa, and Andhra Pradesh for Ganesh Chaturthi/Vinayaka Chaturthi.
- September 15: Banks closed in Gujarat, Odisha, and Goa for Samvatsari and Ganesh Chaturthi (second day).
- September 21: Closures in Assam and Kerala for the Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva and Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi, respectively.
- September 22: Banks closed in Jharkhand for Karma Puja.
- September 23: Banks closed in Jammu & Kashmir for the Birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji.
- September 25: Banks closed in Sikkim for Indrajatra.
In addition to these specific festival and state-declared holidays, all banks remain closed on every second and fourth Saturday of the month, as well as on all Sundays. Customers are encouraged to plan their financial requirements accordingly to avoid any inconvenience.
