India’s Foreign Minister Visits Kyiv in “Historic” Bid to Address Food Security and War Resolution
KYIV — Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar arrived in Kyiv on Thursday for a landmark visit, marking his first standalone trip to Ukraine since the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion. The high-stakes diplomatic mission focused on the critical issues of Black Sea shipping safety and the broader search for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The visit comes closely on the heels of a high-profile meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week, placing India in a delicate position as it attempts to maintain its traditional ties with Moscow while engaging with Kyiv’s leadership to address the war’s global repercussions.
A Focus on Global Food Security
During his meetings with Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, Jaishankar underscored the urgency of protecting maritime trade. Russia’s ongoing campaign of strikes on Ukrainian ports and merchant vessels has severely disrupted agricultural exports, threatening food supplies to vulnerable nations that rely on these maritime routes.
“We discussed the situation in the Black Sea, including the existing threats to civilian shipping,” President Zelensky stated on social media following the talks. “It is absolutely unacceptable to block food supplies to regions where this is a highly sensitive issue and where people depend on these maritime routes.”
India’s Stance on Peace
Addressing reporters in the Ukrainian capital, Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to de-escalation, noting that the conflict has become Europe’s deadliest since World War II.
“Every passing day of conflict only means more deaths and more destruction,” Jaishankar said. “Understandably, it is for the parties involved to find a way. But if India can be of any help in any manner, we are ready. And this was the core of my discussion today.”
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga hailed the visit as a “historic moment,” expressing gratitude for the Indian delegation’s “brave visit” to a city that remains under near-constant threat of aerial bombardment.
Ongoing Threat
The gravity of the security environment was underscored during the delegation’s stay. President Zelensky revealed that while the Indian officials were in Kyiv, Russia launched a wave of jet-powered “Shahed” drones, many of which were intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses.
These new, faster, jet-powered drones have intensified the threat to Kyiv and surrounding regions over the past week, triggering frequent air raid alerts, damaging residential infrastructure, and wounding civilians.
For many observers, the visit represents a significant shift in India’s diplomatic engagement with the region. By facilitating a dialogue on food security and conflict resolution, New Delhi is signaling an increased interest in being perceived as a constructive player in the international effort to mitigate the fallout of the war.
