Richard Hammond’s £1.99m Welsh Mansion Dream Faces Unexpected Wildlife Hurdles
Former Top Gear star Richard Hammond has encountered a significant bureaucratic obstacle in his pursuit of the perfect home. The 56-year-old television presenter, who recently purchased a historic Georgian mansion in Llanwenarth, Monmouthshire, for £1.99 million, is finding that his ambitious renovation plans must now accommodate some unexpected, furry inhabitants.
A Grand Vision Grounded by Wildlife
Hammond acquired the sprawling 21-acre estate with grand aspirations for its future. His vision included the construction of a modern pavilion, a padel court, and specialized, custom-designed display rooms to house his extensive and famous car collection. However, a mandatory ecological survey has brought those plans to a temporary standstill.
Wildlife experts conducting surveys on the grounds between June and August identified no fewer than eight species of bats using the estate to hunt and roost. Notably, at least two species were found to be emerging from a stone barn that sits directly in the path of Hammond’s planned renovations.
Legal Protection and Potential Solutions
The presence of these bats presents a complex legal challenge. Under UK law, bats are strictly protected; it is a criminal offense to deliberately disturb, injure, or kill them, or to damage or destroy their roosting sites.
To proceed with his development, Hammond may be required to obtain a specific license from government authorities. This process often necessitates the integration of “bat-friendly” architecture into the renovation plans, such as installing dedicated roosting spaces, incorporating special voids in the construction, and adding custom bat boxes to the property.
Despite the setback, Hammond’s planning agents remain optimistic. They have defended the proposed development to The Times, describing the project as a “heritage-led design process” that aims to secure the property’s long-term future through “sensitive repair, restoration, and adaptation.”
A New Chapter for the Presenter
This property venture represents a fresh start for the presenter. The move comes roughly a year after Hammond and his wife of 23 years, Mindy Etheridge, announced their separation. Expressing his enthusiasm for the project, Hammond previously shared, “I moved house recently. These cars have never lived here and they’re home. My babies are back. I’m childish, but I’m excited.”
Life Beyond the Mansion
While he navigates the complexities of his Welsh mansion, Hammond remains a prominent figure in the automotive world. Following the conclusion of his tenure alongside Jeremy Clarkson and James May on The Grand Tour, the show is set to transition to a new presenting team, including Francis Bourgeois.
Outside of his professional life, Hammond has also been candid about the anxieties of fatherhood. He recently opened up about his 25-year-old daughter, Izzy, and her burgeoning racing career. Reflecting on her recent crash during a Formula E driving stint, the presenter admitted that his own history with dangerous motorsport makes watching her race particularly nerve-wracking.
“I’m a father, like any other father. I don’t want to see my little girl hurt, but I don’t want to hold her back,” Hammond remarked, emphasizing his pride in watching her forge her own path.
