Jin Sakai Returns: Sucker Punch Reveals ‘Most Wanted’ Roguelike Mode for Ghost of Yōtei

During today’s highly anticipated State of Play showcase, developer Sucker Punch Productions pulled back the curtain on Most Wanted, the adrenaline-fueled roguelike mode originally announced alongside the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition back in August.

The gameplay debut provided a deeper look at the mode’s mechanics and, in a surprise twist, confirmed the return of a legendary warrior: Ghost of Tsushima protagonist Jin Sakai.

A Familiar Ghost Joins the Roster

Jin Sakai’s inclusion brings the total number of playable characters in Most Wanted to four, joining the previously revealed Atsu, Oyuki, and Nagato. Players eager to step back into the shoes of the Ghost will be pleased to note that Jin retains his signature versatility; the trailer showcased his classic four combat stances in action.

While players begin their journey with Atsu, Jin and the other two characters must be unlocked through gameplay. Each hero features a distinct playstyle defined by unique weapons, specialized abilities, and powerful ultimate moves.

Roguelike Combat and Escalating Bounties

Most Wanted is designed as a single-player, high-stakes survival challenge. The mode utilizes a structured roguelike loop where players accept bounties to hunt down members of the “Yōtei Six.” Each run requires players to fight through waves of increasingly difficult enemies, with each successful wave granting access to new perks. These perks are essential for building character power, allowing players to customize their combat capabilities on the fly.

The ultimate goal of the mode is to hunt down the primary antagonist, Lord Saito. For those seeking a greater challenge, bounties can be replayed at higher difficulty tiers, yielding superior rewards.

Progression and Integration

Sucker Punch has implemented a persistent progression system fueled by “Mon,” a currency earned during runs. This currency can be spent outside of the roguelike mode to unlock new techniques, charms, and weapon upgrades, ensuring that players grow progressively stronger with each session. Furthermore, the developer confirmed that certain cosmetic rewards earned in Most Wanted can be equipped in the game’s main campaign and the Echoes of Sekigahara story expansion.

“It was important to us to make Most Wanted feel like an extension of Ghost of Yōtei’s core combat systems,” Sucker Punch noted in an official PlayStation Blog post. “We want playing through runs to take the familiar weapons and systems you’re used to and turn them into a fresh experience that lets you experiment with characters and builds.”

Ghost of Yōtei: Complete Edition is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on October 1st. For existing owners of the base game, an upgrade path is available for £11.99 / $14.99, granting access to both the Most Wanted mode and the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion.
