GTA 6 Netflix Reveal Sparks Major Surge in UK Console Sales

The gaming industry has received a much-needed boost in the United Kingdom following the high-profile reveal of Grand Theft Auto 6 on Netflix. New data suggests that the monumental hype surrounding the upcoming title has translated into immediate, tangible demand for hardware.

According to market intelligence from Nielsen HQ, reported via The Game Business, the UK saw a dramatic spike in console sales last week. PlayStation 5 units experienced a 33% surge, while Xbox Series X and S sales climbed by 34%. This widespread demand has reportedly led to stock shortages at several major retailers across the country.

The catalyst for this sudden interest appears to be the “Extended Look” trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6, which was premiered on Netflix and has since been viewed by over 30 million people. The massive engagement with the footage seems to have convinced long-time holdouts to upgrade their hardware in preparation for the game’s highly anticipated release.

A Welcome Relief for Hardware Manufacturers

This uptick provides a significant reprieve for console manufacturers, who have been grappling with a sluggish market. Year-on-year hardware sales in the UK were previously down by 14.4%, driven largely by a 32% decline in PS5 movement. While the Xbox Series line had remained resilient with a modest 3.1% growth, the recent post-reveal jump marks a significant shift in market momentum.

The situation has been notably more difficult in the United States, where hardware sales recently saw their worst July since the onset of the pandemic. Supply chain constraints and global component shortages have kept prices high, discouraging potential buyers. According to tracking firm Circana, the average price for a new gaming console in the US reached $502 in May—a 14% increase year-over-year. As of last month, the average price of a PS5 had climbed to $672, while the average Xbox price rose to $524.

The “Hardware Shock” Outlook

Despite the current excitement, some industry analysts remain cautious regarding long-term hardware trends. Speaking to The Game Business, Newzoo analyst Ronan Patrick suggested that while tentpole releases like Grand Theft Auto 6 and Call of Duty will undoubtedly increase the active install base, the growth may not be as explosive as some might hope, largely due to the increased cost of entry.

“The PS5 in inflation-adjusted terms is 67% more expensive [than at launch], and Xbox is twice as expensive,” Patrick noted.

However, he emphasized that the industry’s focus might be shifting. Drawing parallels to the GPU shortage of 2020–2021, Patrick argued that high hardware prices have not historically stifled engagement or revenue. Instead, consumers have largely shifted their spending habits toward software and services.

“It’s important to remember that the lion’s share of time is often spent on older titles,” said Patrick. “You basically saw a reallocation of spend into software.”

As the industry looks toward the November launch window, the UK PS5 and Xbox sales surge serves as a clear indicator that despite economic headwinds, blockbuster franchises remain the most powerful driver for hardware adoption in the modern era.
