At the time, the Environmental Research Laboratories within NOAA were heavily focused on the latter. When leadership pushed back against these new guidelines, they were sidelined.

While the U.S. currently leads in the development of superintelligence, China is rapidly outpacing competitors in the integration of AI into real-world applications. To maintain its edge, the U.S. is funneling immense capital into the sector, often at the expense of traditional scientific funding.

The Role of Environmental Science

For environmental scientists, the path forward may involve “hitching their wagon” to the AI star. Environmental science is essential to the success of AI-enabled infrastructure—from optimizing electrical grids during weather-driven energy fluctuations to improving agribusiness, water resource management, and emergency response.

While some researchers may fear that integrating with AI could relegate environmental science to “second fiddle,” this adaptability is actually a core strength of the field. Throughout the past two centuries, meteorology has advanced by consistently mastering and harnessing new computing and observational technologies.

As we navigate this period of uncertainty, the ability to pivot is essential. Whether the field is labeled “AI-supported geosciences” or “geoscience-enabled AI” may ultimately be irrelevant. What matters is the ability to maintain progress and ensure that the “heart” of scientific inquiry remains intact.
