With an increasingly unpredictable US, the Philippines looks closer to home for strategic partnerships
The Philippines marks 80 years of official ties with Australia, and 70 years with Japan. These anniversaries come amid an increasingly uncertain geopolitical environment in the Asia Pacific.
Rappler editor-at-large Marites Vitug tells us, the Philippines is entering into new agreements with these strategic partners to broaden security cooperation and interoperability. Australia and Japan are also contributing directly to the Philippines’ efforts to strengthen its military.
The US remains the Philippines’ sole treaty ally, but its behavior, of late, casts doubts on its reliability. And so Manila has been looking closer to home for strategic partnerships. – Rappler.com
