Czechia Swelters in Unprecedented October Heatwave as Records Topple

Czechia basked in an unseasonably warm spell this Wednesday, as the country experienced the peak of its current Indian summer. The warm weather brought temperatures soaring past the 26-degree Celsius mark in several locations, with long-standing meteorological records tumbling across the nation.

According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI), the highest reading of the day was recorded in Husinec-Řež, located just outside of Prague, where the mercury climbed to a balmy 26.2 degrees Celsius. This reading surpassed the previous record for September 30, which had stood at 26 degrees Celsius since 2011. Close behind was Doksany in the Litoměřice region, which reported a sweltering 26.1 degrees Celsius.

Beyond these top-tier readings, the day was characterized by a widespread “summer day”—a classification used by Czech meteorologists to denote temperatures reaching at least 25 degrees Celsius. Eight additional stations across the country officially reached or crossed this threshold, including a station in Prague’s Komořany district, which peaked at 25.1 degrees Celsius.

While temperatures were high in the lowlands, the most significant meteorological milestones occurred in the Šumava region. Although many stations reported high numbers, the CHMI only validates new records for sites that have been in continuous operation for at least 30 years. Three such long-running stations in and around the Šumava mountains officially confirmed that Wednesday’s heat was unprecedented for the date in their respective multi-decade histories.

The warmth was not confined to a single area, with cities and towns across Central Bohemia, South Moravia, and South Bohemia enjoying similar summer-like conditions. Residents were treated to a rare late-season gift, as many took the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities in the unseasonably mild air.

Despite the intensity of the heat, the period of record-breaking warmth is expected to see a brief interruption. Meteorologists predict that temperatures may once again flirt with 25 degrees Celsius on Thursday in isolated pockets of the country. However, a weakening cold front is forecasted to roll into western Bohemia by Thursday evening. This front is expected to bring localized rain on Friday, particularly affecting the mountainous regions of western and northwestern Bohemia.

Fortunately for those enjoying the mild weather, the cooldown will be fleeting. The CHMI anticipates that the Indian summer will largely persist through the weekend, with sunny conditions returning and temperatures hovering in the pleasant range of 20 to 22 degrees Celsius.

The stable, warm weather pattern is currently expected to hold steady until the middle of next week. Meteorologists warn that a more significant and noticeable cooling trend is likely to arrive from the northwest toward the latter half of next week, finally marking the transition into more typical autumn temperatures.
