Lured by False Promises: 12 Bangladeshis Detained After Failed Bid for Indian Work

Assam Police Detains 12 Bangladeshi Nationals in Goalpara; Human Trafficking Ring Exposed

Goalpara, Assam: In a significant breakthrough amid the ongoing crackdown against illegal migration, the Assam Police apprehended 12 Bangladeshi nationals in Goalpara town on the evening of October 9. The group, which included several children, was intercepted following suspicious activity reported by local residents near the town’s bus stand.

Alert Locals Lead to Police Action

The incident unfolded when a group of 12 individuals, who had arrived on a bus from Guwahati, began loitering for an extended period near the Goalpara bus terminal. Their presence and demeanor drew the attention of local citizens, who promptly notified the authorities. Upon arrival, police personnel conducted an initial questioning, during which the individuals confessed to being citizens of Bangladesh who had recently entered India.

The Trafficking Trail

Preliminary investigations have shed light on a sophisticated human trafficking network operating across the international border. According to the statements provided by the detainees, the group originated from the Moulvibazar and Sylhet districts of Bangladesh.

Sirajul Islam, identified as one of the adults among the group, revealed that they were lured by a Bangladeshi broker named Sabuj with false promises of stable employment in Assam. Following these instructions, the group successfully crossed the porous border through a dense forest route on October 6.

The traffickers then moved the group into Indian territory, transporting them through Meghalaya to Guwahati. The victims were promised jobs in local stone quarries to justify their transit. However, once in Guwahati, their situation deteriorated rapidly. According to the detainees, a member of the local trafficking syndicate took Rs 7,000 and confiscated their mobile phones under the pretext of arranging travel tickets, only to abandon them entirely. Left with no resources and no means of communication, the group boarded a bus to Goalpara, where their journey eventually came to an abrupt end.

Authorities Move Detainees to Transit Camp

Following their initial detention at the Goalpara Sadar Police Station, the group was held overnight for further questioning. On October 10, they were transferred to the Reserve Police Line in Beltala for a more detailed interrogation to ascertain how they bypassed border security and to identify other members of the trafficking gang involved.

Following these procedural checks, the authorities have moved the 12 individuals, which include women and children, to the Matia Transit Camp. The detainees have been identified as Sirajul Islam (45), Jobeda Begum (38), Faim Ahmed (24), Rahem Ahmed (18), Tania Begum (19), Amir Ali (38), Khodeja Begum (36), Rohen Ali (19), Rumena Akhtar (18), and three minor children: Fahima Begum (1.4 years), Ali Hussain (5.5 years), and Yasin Ali (10 months).

This incident highlights the persistent challenges faced by security forces in curbing illegal migration and human trafficking in the Northeast region. Police investigations are currently underway to dismantle the remaining links of the broker network that facilitated the illegal crossing.
