KELOWNA — Emergency crews are currently responding to a chaotic scene in Kelowna following a pair of collisions on Springfield Road that occurred within minutes of each other on Wednesday afternoon.
The first incident was reported near the intersection of Springfield and Bredin Road, while a second, more severe collision took place shortly after at the intersection of Springfield and Cooper Road. The multiple-vehicle crash at Cooper Road has drawn a heavy presence from the Kelowna Fire Department, BC Emergency Health Services, and the Kelowna RCMP.
At the Cooper Road site, a white truck sustained significant damage after smashing into signage at the United Plaza, located on the southeast corner of the intersection. A black truck was also involved in the pileup. A witness at the scene told Black Press Media that both trucks involved in the incident appeared to have attempted to clear the intersection as the light turned yellow, resulting in the collision.
Paramedics are currently treating several individuals at the scene. One victim was stabilized on a stretcher and fitted with a neck brace before being loaded into an ambulance. A second individual involved in the crash was seen walking to the emergency vehicle under their own power. Due to the number of people requiring medical attention, additional ambulances were requested to the scene shortly after the initial dispatch.
The extent of the injuries sustained by those involved remains unknown at this time.
The emergency response has caused significant traffic disruptions in the area. Authorities have blocked all northbound traffic on Cooper Road while crews work to clear the wreckage and ensure the area is safe. Motorists are being advised to avoid the intersection and seek alternate routes, as the investigation into the circumstances of the crashes is ongoing.
“We are currently gathering details regarding the two incidents,” a spokesperson noted, as the Kelowna RCMP continues to interview witnesses and assess the scene.
Black Press Media has a reporter on-site, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has dashcam footage of the Springfield Road corridor from earlier this afternoon is encouraged to contact the Kelowna RCMP.
As of 12:44 p.m., emergency personnel remain active at the intersection. Commuters should expect delays throughout the afternoon as investigators process the scene and heavy machinery is brought in to remove the damaged vehicles from the plaza signage.
