Pedestrian Critical After South Omaha Collision Leaves Community Stunned

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) — Omaha police are investigating an early morning collision that left one person hospitalized after a vehicle struck them near a busy South Omaha intersection.

Officers were dispatched to the vicinity of 33rd and L streets at approximately 3:15 a.m. on Sunday. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, largely due to the victim’s refusal to cooperate with law enforcement.

According to the Omaha Police Department, the investigation began when a group of witnesses approached officers at a nearby gas station. The witnesses alerted police to the situation and provided digital video evidence that allegedly captured the moment the pedestrian was struck. Armed with this footage, officers responded to the scene, where they discovered the victim lying on the ground.

While the individual was unable to rise due to the impact, responders noted that there were no immediately visible life-threatening injuries. Despite the clear physical distress and the potential trauma of the collision, the victim remained tight-lipped, declining to provide officers with any information regarding the circumstances of the incident, the identity of the driver, or the type of vehicle involved.

Emergency medical services were called to the scene, and the victim was subsequently transported to a local hospital. Officials have since categorized the injuries as non-life-threatening.

The lack of cooperation from the victim has complicated the early stages of the investigation. Police are now working to analyze the video footage provided by the witnesses to identify the vehicle and the driver who fled the scene. As of Sunday morning, authorities have not released a description of the vehicle or announced any arrests.

Local residents and commuters are being urged to exercise caution in the area while the investigation remains active. Investigators are also appealing to anyone who may have been in the vicinity of 33rd and L streets early Sunday morning and who might have further information—or additional surveillance footage—to come forward.

The intersection, which typically sees high volumes of traffic, was cordoned off for a brief period early Sunday as officers processed the scene for evidence. Police have not yet disclosed whether they believe alcohol or speed played a role in the crash.

As the investigation continues, officials are reminding the public that leaving the scene of an accident involving bodily injury is a serious criminal offense. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Omaha Police Department or provide an anonymous tip through local crime-stopping channels.
