Tata Communications Unveils ₹4,350 Crore Investment to Power India’s AI Infrastructure
New Delhi: In a strategic move to bolster India’s burgeoning artificial intelligence ecosystem, Tata Communications has announced a massive capital expenditure plan of ₹4,350 crore. The telecommunications giant intends to deploy approximately 10,000 km of AI-ready connectivity infrastructure across the country, aiming to bridge the critical gap between data centres and high-performance AI processing hubs.
The ambitious project is scheduled to be executed in three distinct phases spanning from the 2030 to 2036 fiscal years. Emphasizing financial self-reliance, the company confirmed that the entire development will be financed through its own operating cash flows rather than external debt.
Meeting the Data Demand
The timing of this infrastructure rollout aligns with a period of explosive growth for India’s digital backbone. According to data from Cushman & Wakefield, the nation’s operational data centre capacity hit 1.8 GW in the first half of 2026, with another 3.86 GW already in the pipeline for completion by 2030. As cloud adoption accelerates and enterprises scale their AI deployments, the requirement for high-speed, low-latency connectivity between these massive data repositories has become a business imperative.
Rupesh Chokshi, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Tata Communications, noted that the project is positioned to capture a significant market share. “From a business case perspective, it would be any industry benchmark 15 to 20% return on investment,” Chokshi stated. He highlighted that while competitors are largely focused on either physical data centre construction or localized connectivity, Tata Communications is securing a first-mover advantage by creating a national, high-capacity mesh specifically designed for data-centre-to-data-centre traffic.
Strategic Rollout and Expansion
The inaugural phase of the initiative will concentrate on the critical growth corridor connecting Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai. These cities currently serve as the primary nerve centers for hyperscale data centres and AI activity. The company expects this initial phase to be fully operational within the next three years.
Subsequent phases are designed to expand the network’s footprint to emerging hubs such as Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar, and GIFT City. Furthermore, Tata Communications plans to link these domestic clusters with its vast international cable landing stations, effectively integrating India’s internal AI infrastructure with the company’s massive global network backbone. This interconnection is expected to streamline data flow between Indian AI hubs and international markets, reinforcing India’s status as a key node in the global cloud ecosystem.
Future-Proofing Connectivity
Modern AI workloads require more than just computing power; they demand a level of reliability and latency that traditional networks often struggle to maintain. By leveraging its existing legacy of over 500,000 km of subsea optical fibre and 200,000 km of terrestrial fibre, Tata Communications is engineering this new network to meet the rigorous demands of global hyperscalers, neocloud providers, and large-scale AI platforms.
As the company continues to upgrade its national long-distance and metropolitan networks, this investment signifies a long-term commitment to digitizing the Indian economy. By providing the essential “digital pipes” for the AI era, Tata Communications is ensuring that India’s infrastructure keeps pace with the global shift toward automated and intelligence-led enterprise operations.
