Basildon residents report ‘strong stink’ as site told by Environment Agency to take action

The company has been told to make improvements to reduce ‘disruption’ to residents

An Essex waste management site has been told to ‘make improvements’ to reduce disruptions to residents – after multiple people living nearby reported the site as having a ‘strong stink’. Clearaway Recycling is based at Archers Fields, Burnt Mill Industrial Site, in Basildon.

The family-run business promises to take care of many waste-related needs. These include skip hire, wheelie bin hire, waste disposal and more.

Clearaway Recycling was founded in 2010, and has since done lots to commit to the local community. This includes supporting Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, Lennox Children’s Hospice and Havens Hospices to name a few.

However, recently, nearby residents have said that the site ‘keeps’ giving off ‘strong stinks’. It has been reported that the site has been reported to the Environment Agency ‘daily’.

Resident Rob Hill said: “The Clearaway site in Archers Field in Basildon keeps giving off strong stinks, loads of us are reporting it daily to the Environment Agency and local councillors are trying to get it sorted.”

The Environment Agency has since confirmed that the site was inspected last week. The company has been told that it must make improvements to reduce harm to the environment and ‘disruption’ to local residents.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “Specialist officers inspected Clearaway Recycling Ltd’s site in Basildon last week, telling the company it must make improvements to reduce harm to the environment and disruption to local residents.

“We keep the site in Archers Field under assessment, and encourage anyone with new concerns about it to call the Environment Agency’s 24-hour incident hotline: 0800 807060. We thank people who have already contacted us.”

Clearaway Recycling has been contacted for comment.
