GB News was interrupted for a breaking update as it was confirmed that Keir Starmer‘s “day of reckoning” has arrived. The prime minister is set to deliver a statement to MPs on Monday (April 20), where he will be expected to explain how Peter Mandelson was appointed as the UK’s ambassador to the US, despite failing the vetting process.

Mandelson was sacked from the role in September 2025 after details of his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein came to light, with Starmer claiming he had no idea of the true extent of their relationship. The Labour leader claimed proper vetting measures were taken during Mandelson’s appointment, however, a recent report from The Guardian revealed this was not true.

Starmer has insisted he was kept in the dark about the vetting process, adding he did not know that the Foreign Office overruled the decision.

Speaking to presenters Alex Armstrong and Ellie Costello on GB News, political commentator Cristo Foufas has now questioned why the prime minister didn’t show curiosity to investigate Mandelson’s security vetting.

“Are we going to get the answers that we need?” he asked. “There are so many questions that we need to know the answer to.”

He continued: “What did the prime minister know and when did he knowingly mislead parliament? Did he accidently mislead parliament? Why does he have the attribute of such a lack of curiosity? This forensic man, we were told.

“This word will come back to haunt him but why would you not ask the question?”

He pointed out that last year, The Independent ran a front page headline claiming that Mandelson had not passed the further security screening.

Foufas suggested this would have been the perfect time for Starmer to take action and look into whether the claims were true.

Armstrong claimed that David Maddox, the person who wrote the story, contacted Tim Allen, the director of communications who reports directly to Starmer, to ask the same question.

“The prime minister said nobody in Downing Street knew. Tim Allen works in Downing Street, he must have known.”

Foufas agreed: “He must have known that someone was asking questions,” adding that Allen should have checked the claims due to how much controversy surrounded Mandelson’s appointment in the first place.

The latest development in the scandal has already caused Olly Robbins, the top civil servant at the Foreign Office, to resign. However, the GB News panel suggested he was sacked.

Of Robbins’ sacking, Foufas claimed: “There is this complete contradiction around him having to resign or be sacked. Keir Starmer is simultaneously saying it was beyond belief he wasn’t told, but separately said all rules were followed and it was the procedure that was wrong.

“If the procedure was wrong and all the rules were followed, why did he have to go? You can’t have it both ways if he did the job the way it’s supposed to be done and the procedure is the thing to blame.

“There are so many contradictions and so many questions that aren’t being answered.”
