The first day of Sai Pallavi’s Hindi Debut Ek Din, has not gone the way many expected, as the romantic drama opened to low numbers at the Indian box office.
The film, starring Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi, released in cinemas on May 1.
However, the response stayed muted through the day with theatre occupancy reportedly remaining around 14%.
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 0.81 crore net in India on its opening day.
The numbers have now placed extra pressure on the film’s weekend performance, especially as romantic dramas have recently seen stronger openings.
For the 33-year-old South Indian star, the film was being watched closely because it marked her first step in Bollywood.
The 32-year-old actor, meanwhile, returned after his earlier film Loveyapa, which had also struggled commercially but still opened better with Rs 1.15 crore on day one.
The comparisons have become harder because Sai’s Telugu film Love Story had opened strongly in 2021, while the Hindi romance Saiyaara started with Rs 21.50 crore earlier this year.
Produced by Aamir Khan Productions, the film is an official remake of the Thai movie One Day. It had originally been planned for release in November last year before moving to May.
Reviews have also remained mixed. One review said, “An artist of the calibre of Sai truly deserved a better Bollywood debut.”
